Ever fancied getting up close and personal with a volcano? Now's your chance!

There are around 1,500 active (ie,erupting or likely to erupt) volcanoes on earth, and many of the world's finest examples are just waiting for adventurous types to explore them. Yes, Volcano tours are all the rage these days.

A series of new volcano trails has just been created on the island of Tenerife, offering an abundance of opportunities for hikers to enjoy the breathtaking volcanic landscapes. The self-guided walks cover the island's five major volcanic areas.

With its unique beauty, over 100 craters, Mount Teide on Tenerife is spectacular. As Spain's highest point, it has a wealth of outdoor adventures for enthusiasts. Hike along the trails as you learn about the lava flows, fly in a hang glider to take in the views of the volcanoes from above and head underground at the Cueva del Viento (adults: 15.30; children: €5.10), one of the world's largest volcanic tubes, which stretches 17 miles.

Hawaii is one of the best places to explore active volcanoes. Head straight for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to see one of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea. You'll find 150 miles of hiking trails through volcanic craters in the massive park, a walk-in lava tube and mysterious petroglyphs. It's the place to be wowed and Kilauea, often referred to as the world's only drive-in volcano, produces 25,000 to 650,000 cubic yards of lava per day - imagine the photo opps!

If you're looking to make your excursions to Hawaii's volcanoes a once in a lifetime experience, opt for one of the volcano helicopter tours where you can see the fiery volcanic explosions of Kilauea from the sky. They're not cheap but if you're looking to splurge on one thing during your trip to Hawaii, a helicopter ride is the way to do it!

Paradise Helicopters
(from $205.20) offers various volcano tours where you can see volcanoes and waterfalls, feel the heat with the doors off and even land in the valley.

Or you could watch the spewing lava touching the sea on a Big island volcano boat tour. Lava Ocean Adventures offers you a front-row seat to view the red hot lava ($175 per adult), plus see the red rivers of lava, volcanic steam explosions and erupting lava bombs.

In Iceland, a visit to the source of the 2010 air travel chaos, Eyjafjallajokull, is a must. The famous ice cap covers the caldera of a volcano and is 1,666 metres in height. The volcano has erupted frequently since the Ice Age and it is one of 35 active volcanoes in Iceland.

There are specialised tours arranged on the glacier for skiing, hiking and super-jeep trips but you should never venture onto the glacier without a guide. Arctic Adventures offers 4x4 volcano tours (226.90 per person) combined with glacier hiking to the top of Eyjafjallajokull.

Alternatively, intrepid travellers can go deep into the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, located between Reykjavik and the Golden Circle area. The Inside the Volcano tour (£180 per person), available during the summer months, is a unique activity which consists of a 50-minute hike to reach the crater and a 120-metre decent to the bottom of the crater in an open cable lift.

If you can't get enough of Iceland's fascinating volcanoes and want to relive the wonder of Eyjafjallajokull, you should visit Iceland Erupts (adults: £4; children: free), a family-run exhibition which gives you a personal look at what it's like to have a volcano at your back door!

The visitor centre opened on 14 April 2011 - exactly one year after the start of the Eyjafjallajokull eruption - and features the dramatic history of volcanism in Iceland, dramatic posters and a short film about the natural event.

Ever seen a road rainbow?Michael Elion/Caters

This colourful arch is a real rainbow made by an artist, who created it as part of a public display in a street in Cape Town.

Michael Elion made the beautiful show outside the Commune1 gallery in the city, along with photographers Guto Bussab and Bart Fouche.

Passing members of the public jumped up to touch the magical phenomenon - although Michael said a pot of gold was not found.

The rainbows were created out of water vapour and sunlight, generated using a high pressure pump powered by a petrol motor.

As water leaves the tank it is atmozied by a special nozzle, making it an exact size which can generate the rainbow effect.

Michael said it took almost a year of hard graft working with the physics of the display to make it successful: "I started trying to create a rainbow in 2009. I had been surfing and mist was blowing off the waves out to sea, every now and again a perfectly circular rainbow would appear in front of me and then disappear.

"It was such a powerful and enchanting phenomenon that I wanted to try and recreate one inside a frame as an artwork.

"Through that process I started investigating how rainbows are formed, and how to create bigger ones. I first successfully created a large rainbow in 2010."

"People really loved it. On the day the photos were taken people were dancing in the street and jumping around like children.

Did you know that there's a statue of Christ 10m under water between the islands of Malta and Gozo?

No, nor did we until we spotted this Youtube video.

Apparently the statue, which measures around 3m and can be found around two kilometres from the coast, was purposely placed there as an attraction for scuba divers.

It was placed on the sea bed to commemorate the 1990 visit of Pope John Paul II to Malta.

What do you think? Stunningly beautiful or spookily eerie? Leave your comments below!

We've seen some scary take-offs in our time, but this Russian aircraft taking off in swamp is definitely among worst.

This video, posted by NYCAviation TV, was taken in Bodaybo, Russia, which has been a tad muddy recently (it sits on the banks of the Vitim River, which doesn't help).

We just can't imagine what the pilot was thinking...and at the same time, we're rather thankful that we weren't on the plane at the time...

Cute video: Wild koala crawls up tourist's leg for a cuddleHerald Sun

A Canadian couple on a working holiday in Australia had a lucky - and very cute - encounter with a koala during a hike along The Great Ocean Walk in Victoria.

The cuddly critter took an interest in Charli, and came over to say hello, before clambering up her leg for a little hug.

She told the Herald Sun: "We'd just woken up and were making our way along the path when I spotted this little koala.

"After calling to him: 'Hey koala, hey sweetie, etc', he starting walking toward us!

"I couldn't believe how close he got and that's when I turned the video camera on."

She added: "I wanted to make sure we got a good photo (and wasn't sure if the quality of the video still would be ok), so I asked my husband to take a photo.

"I held him for a few minutes longer until he looked 'fussy' and when he was ready to go I made a ramp of my leg for him and he climbed back down and then straight up a tree!"

The video was actually shot in December 2010, but has only just started to go viral.

London's iconic Admiralty Arch to be turned into luxury hotel

Admiralty Arch to be turned into luxury hotelGetty

London's iconic Admiralty Arch is set to be turned into a luxury hotel and restaurant with views over Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace after being sold to Spanish developers of £60 million.

The gateway, built in 1912 as a memorial to Queen Victoria, has seen hordes of marathon runners beneath it, as well as the Prince William and Duchess Kate's wedding party.

New owners Prime Investors Capital have bought 80,000 square foot space on a 99-year leasehold contract, and will now seek planning permission to turn the building into a hotel with 100 rooms, and a panoramic restaurant and bar at the top.

The new owners hope to attract more than 50,000 guests a year to the hotel and more than 50,000 visitors for the views.

After decades serving as an office block for civil servants, ministers last year decided the building could be better used as a tourist destination.

Francis Maude, a Cabinet Office minister, said he hope the new owners would "bring the arch back to life".

He told the Daily Telegraph: "Rather than letting it fall into disrepair we are taking action. Taxpayers should not be footing the bill for property that isn't needed."

Mr Maude said the sale of public buildings will "spur growth" as well as being a heritage project, adding: "The restoration will bring jobs to London and beyond. The freehold of the building will remain in the hands of the public, ensuring they have a say in the future of this building forever."

Videos of cruise ships being tossed around are popping up aplenty on the net - but this one is the scariest of all. It's proof of how much fun it wouldn't be to be stuck on a ship in a hurricane.

Hurricane Sandy: 16 killed, 6 million without power, thousands of travellers strandedNew York loses power - Monday 29 October. Getty

Sandy, now a post-tropical storm, has caused widespread devastation, including unprecedented flooding and power cuts to the US East Coast and New York City.

A 13-foot wall of water has hit the coast, and at least 33 people have been killed in the US and Canada, including 15 deaths in New York State.

President Obama has declared a 'major disaster' in New York City and Long Island.

In a press conference New Jersey governor Chris Christie said the level of devastation is 'unthinkable'. 'This is beyond anything I ever thought I would see,' he added.

The superstorm hit Manhattan at 6.30pm local time on Monday, leading to the city shutting its mass transit system, schools, the stock exchange and Broadway. Hundreds of New Yorkers were forced to leave their homes.

There was severe flooding to subways and road tunnels after a 13-foot wall of water caused by the storm surge and high tides hit the city. Water poured into the Ground Zero building works and cars were swept down the streets.

Millions of people across the US East Coast have been left without power and last night Manhattan was left deserted and dark when the city's utility company cut power to 250,000 customers as water flooded the island from three sides and reaching rail yards, subway tracks, roads and tunnels.

At least 7.4 million are now believed to be without power and nearly 2 million of these are in New York.

While announcing the re-opening of the Eastside bridges on Tuesday morning (local time), New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said: 'The two biggest challenges facing our city going forward are getting the mass transit system up and running and restoring power.'

The Brooklyn-Battery tunnel, which connects lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, is completely flooded and Central Park has been closed for a clean-up.

Hurricane Sandy: 16 killed, thousands of travellers strandedA fallen tree on a home in Garden City, New York - Monday 29 October. PA

According to the Daily Telegraph, Atlantic City, the Las Vegas of the US East Coast, was under water on Monday as emergency services fought floods in the city. A combination of high tides and a full moon saw strong storm surges break over protected sea walls and sweep through the streets.

On Sunday 40,000 residents evacuated their homes after their Governor Chris Christie warned them not to be 'plain stupid'.

Tourists also had to leave Atlantic City as hotels, casinos, restaurants and bars closed to prepare for the storm.

In New York, two children were killed by a falling tree. Jack Baumler, 11, and Michael Robson, 13, were crushed as they played outside their home in Westchester County, New York State, at 6.45pm on Monday.

A woman was electrocuted to death by falling wires on Manhattan's 134th street and a 29-year-old man was killed in a car crash in Queens.

Police in Toronto, Canada said a woman died when high winds caused a sign to fall.

More deaths were reported in New Jersey, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Hurricane Sandy: 16 killed, thousands of travellers strandedCancelled flights at Heathrow Airport - Monday 29 October. PA

After a round of flights to America were cancelled on Monday, thousands of Britons face another day of travel chaos as BA and Virgin Atlantic cancel more flights today.

BA has decided to operate all flights to Boston as normal with the first scheduled to leave Heathrow at 11.20am. On its website, Virgin Atlantic said: 'ALL our flights to and from New York JFK and Newark airports on Tuesday 30 October and some early departures from New York JFK and Newark on Wednesday 31 October are now cancelled.'

Metro reports that 7,500 flights to the US were cancelled yesterday and nearly all of these were related to the storm.

ABCNews reports that all four New York City airports remain closed.

According to Metro, Sandy has been stripped of its hurricane status due to its shape and internal temperature. However it is still carrying hurricane-force winds.

Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg said the worst of the rain had passed and the passing of the high tide should see the flooding subside.

BA resumes flights to Boston - but thousands of Britons are strandedPA

Now that the worst of Hurricane Sandy is believed to be over, British Airways has resumed flights to Boston as normal, with the first flight scheduled to leave at 11.20am today.

However, the Daily Mail reports that tens of thousands of holidaymakers have been left stranded on both sides of the Atlantic after dozens of flights were cancelled yesterday.

It could take days before Britons who are stuck in the US can get back home to the UK, as flights back to London and Manchester have been cancelled.

Virgin Atlantic are currently reviewing their planned cancellations for today.

A BA spokesperson told the Daily Mail: "Customer safety with regards to Hurricane Sandy remains our highest priority and following advice from US authorities we have deiced to cancel 11 return flights to and from the East Coast of the USA on Tuesday.

"We are doing all we can to help customers whose flights have been cancelled and will look to use larger aircraft on some routes when the full flying schedule resumes to help get customers to their correct destination as quickly as we can."

In a statement, BA said: "The cancellations include some flights to New York JFK, Newark, Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Customers should continue to check ba.com for the very latest information."

BA's other US flights are operating normally.

President Obama declares Superstorm Sandy a 'major disaster'PA

Barack Obama has declared a 'major disaster' in New York and Long Island, due to the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy.

The Telegraph reports that at last 16 people were killed and over seven million were left without power as the storm lashed the east coast of America overnight.

President Obama has now freed up federal aid to help people whose homes have been destroyed or damaged.

According to Sky News, the storm brought winds of more than 85mph and a record-breaking 13ft surge of seawater in Manhattan. There are fears that the seawater could damage the underground electrical and communications lines that are vital to New York's business district.

At least 50 homes were destroyed by fire in the borough of Queens and seven New York subway tunnels and six bus garages were flooded - bringing the city's public transport system to a halt.

New York University hospital was forced to move patients after it lost power and its back-up generator broke down. Patients included 20 babies from neonatal intensive care.

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg said that the worst of the storm has now passed and officials expected the tidal surge to recede by Wednesday.

Further along the east coast, a levee broke in northern New Jersey earlier this morning, flooding nearby towns with up to five feet of water.

An alert was issued at the New Jersey Oyster Creek nuclear power plant due to a storm surge. If flood levels continue to rise, operators could be forced to use emergency water supplies to cool uranium fuel rods.

Atlantic City, in New Jersey, is still severely flooded and up to 500 people have been stranded on the town's barrier island since Sunday. The city's famous boardwalk was ripped up by the storm.

Documentary makers discover polar bear sanctuary in the Arctic

Documentary makers discover polar bear sanctuary in the ArcticAFP/Getty

A team of BBC2 documentary makers has discovered a previously unknown polar bear sanctuary in the Arctic, which is home to an estimated 20 bears.

For most of the year polar bears live on the frozen sea water, where they hunt seals.

But the Peterman Iceberg in Baffin Bay, which is around 50km off the Canadian coast, is home to the bears during the summer months, when the sea ice melts. At this time of year, most other bears return to land.

During the filming of BBC2's Operation Iceberg, it became clear that some bears prefer to spend winter on the iceberg, where they are safe from human hunters.

Presenter Chris Packham told BBC News: "What's there for them is security, and I think they are taking advantage of that. So I think they are living on the iceberg to stay safe, and just wait for the sea ice to come back in."

Operation Iceberg is on Thursday, November 1 at 9pm on BBC2.

'World's worst waxwork museum' to closeRex

Louis Tussauds House of Wax, a museum in Great Yarmouth which has been labelled the worst waxworks museum in the world, is facing closure after more than 50 years in business.

The Norfolk museum has gained cult status in recent years because so many of the models look nothing like the people they are supposed to be.

Thousands of visitors still flock to the seaside attraction so that they can have a good laugh for the meagre fee of £5.

Owners June and Peter Hayes, who are both now in their eighties, are ready to retire but have not found anyone to take it over.

Most of the models date back to the 1970s and 80s, and include an unflattering Princess Diana and an unrecognisable George Best. See our gallery below to see how many of the figures you recognise.
