A hotel with fittings and furniture made out of cake has opened in London promising sweet dreams for its guests.

The unusual hotel was created by sugar company Tate & Lyle and was open to sweet-toothed guests for one night only.

Visitors were encouraged to eat their way through the sweet furniture, which included windowsills built from fudge, a bath filled with caramel-coated popcorn and an edible rug made out of meringues.

It was the work of 14 artists who spent more than 2,000 hours baking and 900 hours decorating to create the edible hotel.

Up to 600kg of sugar was used and the art was spread across three floors and eight different themed rooms.

The tasting rooms included a Pirates of the Caribbean room with a treasure chest full of edible pearls, ginger-spiced doubloons and cutlasses, as well as a South Pacific room with a two metre-high Easter Island statue made entirely from chocolate mud cake.

James Whitely at Tate & Lyle told Rex Features: "We think the cake hotel perfectly captures the excitement, inspiration and expertise behind the creation of our new range of golden and brown cane sugars.

"We hope that through the cake hotel we can showcase the versatility of golden and brown cane sugars and inspire people to get creative in the kitchen."
