But now a new Virgin entertainment system means you can order that sexy stranger a drink - straight from your seat.
To mark its latest Vegas expansion, Virgin America has launched a first-of-its-kind seat-to-seat delivery service on flights across the US.
The feature allows you to use the airline's Red in-flight entertainment platform to order a drink, meal or snack for fellow guests onboard, using the on-demand food ordering system.
Meaning, you can now send an in-flight cocktail to that friendly stranger in seat 4A - and then follow up with a text message using the seat-to-seat chat function also on Red.
Richard Branson celebrated the launch of Virgin America's new daily non-stop flight service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS) with a red carpet welcome for guests onboard its inaugural flight.
He also introduced the new seat-to-seat buying feature with a video entitled 'Sir Richard Branson's Guide To Getting Lucky'.
After introducing himself as "Branson, Sir Richard Branson", he says, "Here's my guide to getting lucky at 30,000ft."
Then, he gives a step to step guide on how he would woo a woman, including puppies, pole-vaulting, and whisking her off to a private island (ahem Necker?).
Then he says: "For a cost-effective alternative, try treating her or him to something delicious using the new seat-to-seat feature of Red, the Virgin America in-flight entertainment system.
"Just order a drink, meal or snack, select his or her's seat, and don't forget to seal the deal with a suggestive seat-to-seat chat.
He finished: "I'm not a betting man, but I'd say your chances of de-planing with a plus one are at least 50%.
"Best of luck up there. Cheers."
