Qantas builds a plane out of sand

We're all for new and exciting ways to travel but never thought we'd see a plane made of sand.

Australian airline Qantas made quite a stir in Sydney this week when it unveiled a Boeing 737-800 made entirely out of sand.

The giant sand sculpture was to promote the start of new services from Sydney to the Gold Coast.

The sand plane consists of several rows of passengers, a captain and co-captain.

Intricate details, such as the flight deck instruments were also incorporated into the design of the quirky sculpture.

And you'll never guess who has a special seat on the sand plane? Dame Edna Everage! The Australian comedian, famed for her lilac-hued hair and cat-eye glasses, was given a front row seat and the public were invited to take a seat next to her and have their photos taken.

We're not sure if it will catch on but we sure like the idea of sand travel!

Katherine Jenkins is enjoying the sunshine in Miami and was spotted relaxing by her hotel pool with friends.

The Welsh classical singer, 32, looked like she was making the most of her time off after preparing to run the London Marathon in April.

While soaking up the sun poolside, Katherine folded up her yellow maxi dress and showed off her bikini body in a purple bikini as she topped up her tan.

The Daily Mail reports that the singer sunbathed and chatted with female friends and was seen carrying a bridal magazine as her sister Laura is currently planning her wedding.

Katherine will be performing alongside Andrea Bocelli while in the States.

She took to Twitter and wrote to her fans: 'Miami bound for another performance with the big man Andrea Bocelli on Friday in Fort Lauderdale #USA #Sunshine.'

We're sure Katherine will need another relaxing break after running 26 miles in the London Marathon this April.

Night in a beer barrel, anyone? Hotel installs quirky new bedsRex

Lager lovers can now sleep in a giant beer barrel as a hotel in Germany has introduced three quirky beds to its 62-room building.

The huge barrels were built in the 19th century and produced beer for more than 100 years at the local Potts Brewery in North Germany until 1995.

But now the Landhotel Beverland in Ostbevern is treating its guests to a real boozy stay and giving them the chance to sleep in a cosy barrel.

The hotel removed a half-circle from each barrel and installed a platform inside to support a double mattress.

Guests climb inside the recycled beer barrel up a homemade ladder - just like a bunk bed.

Dominic Stern, 29, sales manager at the hotel, told Rex Features: 'The idea with the beer barrel came about in collaboration with the local Pott's brewery.

Night in a beer barrel, anyone? Hotel installs quirky new bedsRex

'In their beer museum they had this spectacular barrel that was in brilliant condition.

'So we decided to transform the barrel into a double bed to be used in the hotel.

'We thought about how we can offer our guests an experience that they would never forget.'

Mr Stern said many of the guests who sleep in the barrels 'are beer lovers - and that is what Germany is known for.'

The bedrooms that contain beer barrel beds also include a massage shower, 42-inch television with internet access and a DVD player.

It costs £88 per night to stay in a barrel, which sleeps two people.

Would you sleep in one of these? Leave a comment and let us know below.

Bored of skiing down plain old slopes? How about skiing downstairs and leaping through windows of a five-story building for a change?

That's what this skier in Alaska did - and this video of him slaloming the "five floors of fury" has made him into a bit of an internet star, as it's gone viral since it was posted last week.

Logan Imlach, a skier from Alaska, was skiing with his friend when they discovered an abandoned old US military block built in the 50s and couldn't resist having a go.

The pair carried piles of snow into the building before carrying out their stunt. The resulting montage took six days to make, but has had thousands of views online since it was posted... What do you reckon? We think it's mad but strangely watchable...

While we're all bitterly complaining about the sleet and snow in the UK at the moment, spare a thought for the people of the southern Brazilian town of Santo Antonio da Platina, where the skies are filled with SPIDERS.

This video shows a rather creepy phenomenon: thousands of spiders dangling from a blanket web from the sky.

Brazilian news outlet G1 interviewed a local biologist who identified the creatures as Anelosimus eximius, a "social spider known" for its massive colonies that create blankets of webs.

Apparently, similar behaviour can be spotted in Chicago, where each year the city experiences an influx of "flying spiders", which spin webs into balloon-like formations and float in the air. It gets so bad that some hotels warn guests to keep their windows shut! Not sure we fancy that...

According to his write up on Vimeo, Oosten says: " The hardest scene of ll was probably the mist scene in Deadvlie. Mist in Deadvlie only occurs around five times a year, so we had to keep a close eye on the weather predictions and many attempts were unsuccessful. When we finally got it right, the results far exceeded our expectations and show Deadvlei as no one has ever seen it before."

Video: 'Mega-pod' of 100,000 dolphins delights tourists in San Diego

A seven-mile-long mega-pod of around 100,000 dolphins delighted tourists - and the captain - on board a whale-watching boat off the coast of San Diego last week.

Captain Joe Dutra of Hornblower Cruises said he saw the "super mega-pod" of dolphins while on his daily tour last Thursday.

He said the pod was seven miles long and five miles wide, and estimated there were around 100,000 dolphins there.

Guests on board the cruise started screaming with delight when they saw the enormous school of dolphins swimming past the boat.

Mr Dutra told NBC San Diego: "They were coming from all directions, you could see them from as far as the eye can see. I've seen a lot of stuff out here... but this is the biggest I've ever seen, ever."

According to the BBC, marine mammal expert Sarah Wilkin said the reason the large pod might be there is because there's plenty of food in the area, including sardines, herring and squid.

She told NBC San Diego: "They're attracted to kind of the same thing, they might wind up in the same place."

Sarah said that although dolphins typically travel in groups of 200 or less, "super-pods" are not unheard of, adding: "They're definitely social animals, they stick together in small groups. But sometimes, the schools come together."

Mr Dutra described the sight as "truly spectacular".

The Sun's surface activity - known as the solar cycle - is the periodic change in levels of solar radiation and ejection of solar material, as well as changes in the number of sunspots and flares.

Solar cycles have a duration of about 11 years, and the pinnacle of the latest one is due later this year, reports the Daily Mail.

Switzerland's only wild bear shot after 'posing threat to humans'Stock photo: Getty

Switzerland
's only recorded wild bear, known as M13, has been shot dead after fears it had begun to pose a threat to humans.

Adrian Aeschlimann, spokesman for the Federal Office for the Environment, said M13 was shot dead by wildlife rangers on Tuesday. He told news.com.au: "The cull was carried out according to the management plan for bears in Switzerland."

M13, who was around two years old, lived in the mountains of the Graubuenden region of eastern Switzerland, on the border with Italy, and spent the spring seasons in the Val Poschiavo.

He had been considered problematic since November 2012, and had headed into residential areas looking for food, sometimes even following people.

According to The Australian, M13 was the only survivor of a trio of cubs who were part of a programme in Italy's Trentino Alto Adige region to reintroduce an animal long wiped out by hunters.

The population in Italy is now thought to be around 30.

The Swiss consulted Italian wildlife protection authorities before making the decision to cull the bear, and attempted to increase its wariness of humans by firing rubber pellets and firecrackers before the fatal shooting.

Environmental campaigners WWF hit out at the decision to shoot M13, saying it was natural for a bear that woke up from hibernation to head into the valley to look for food, and that it would have returned to the mountains as the weather improved.

It added that M13 would have been likely to return to Italy to look for a mate as he matured.

Video: Baby gray whale looking for a cuddle delights tourists

A family in California enjoyed the trip of a lifetime after a baby gray whale swam up to their boat looking for strokes for around an hour.

The amazing video was captured by Dave Anderson, who runs Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari in Baja.

Dave explained that gray whale calves often enjoy people petting them, especially in their mouth and baleen (the part that serves as a filter for catching small food), and likened it to a teething child looking for comfort by having its gums rubbed.

Captain Dave uploaded the video to dolphinsafari.com, and wrote: "This grey whale calf in Magdalena Bay spent nearly an hour with us in one of the best encounters I have ever had with a whale in my life. And I have had many."

One girl can be heard exclaiming: "You are the best baby whale!"

Dave says the whales, which can grow to as long as 50 feet and weigh as much as 40 tons, approach their boats on their own seeking human contact, adding: "No one feeds them or does anything to entice them."

Captain Dave keeps a count on his website of whale sightings, and has spotted eight in one day.

But it's not always such a warm welcome for these beautiful creatures. Dave says gray whales have one of the longest and most dangerous migrations of any mammal in the world, writing: "They have to watch out for killer whales which kill up to 35% of their calves, aboriginal hunters in Russia which are allowed to kill up to 140 a year, and they must avoid ships and getting entangled in fishing gear which kills nearly 1,000 dolphins and whales a day (308,000 a year) worldwide."

Captain Dave's Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari offers daily, year-round, dolphin and whale watching trips from Dana Point Harbour aboard a hi-tech catamaran with Eye-to-Eye Underwater Viewing Pods and live broadcasting from dolphinsafari.com.
