Ryanair 'putting passengers' lives at risk', say pilots

Ryanair 'putting passengers' lives at risk', say pilotsGetty

Four Ryanair pilots have warned on Dutch TV that the airline is putting its passengers' lives at risk - by flying with the minimum amount of fuel to save money.

The pilots said they are often just minutes away from making distress calls due to low fuel.

They also said the "stress" of flying with such low fuel levels leaves impedes their decision-making abilities in the cockpit.

The four pilots told of their fears on a Dutch TV show, but decided to keep their identities anonymous.

According to The Sun, one said: "There is pressure put on crews to take as little fuel as possible, in order to save money for the company."

Another added: "I hope it doesn't take a crash from one of our planes to wake everybody up."

But Ryanair boss Michael O'Leary said the claims are not true, adding: "They are quoted anonymously, because what they are telling you are lies."

A spokesperson for the company said: "The claims made by this Dutch TV programme are factually untrue.

"TV programmes such as this, which are based on false claims by anonymous contributors, have no credibility."

It is not the first time the issue of flying with low fuel has been levelled at Ryanair; back in September, Spanish pilot union leaders accused Ryanair of flying planes with almost-empty fuel tanks as a way to cut costs.

The Daily Mail reports that the budget airline is being investigated by Irish and Spanish aviation authorities after a spokesperson for the Spanish union complained that Ryanair is "courting disaster" and "operating on the very limits of legality" in the way it fuels its planes.

The decision to investigate came after Irish and Spanish air safety experts met in Dublin about the diversion to Madrid of a Ryanair flight from Paris to Tenerife in September.

Spanish authorities are also investigating emergency landings by three Ryanair planes in Valencia on the same day (26 July), after they approached their minimum required fuel after being diverted from Madrid because of bad weather.

They were asked to join a queue but were given priority when they declared an 'emergency' due to low fuel.

Ryanair insists that these landings were all in line with EU safety procedures and says that passengers were not in danger. The budget airline has also rejected claims by the Irish pilots' union (IALOA) that it pressures crew to carry the minimum amount of fuel required under EU regulations.

But Evan Cullen, who heads the Irish Airline Pilots Association, told the Irish Times that Ryanair was "making pilots uncomfortable about taking extra fuel when they feel they need to take extra fuel."

photo of starlings in the sky show amazing formations Caters/George Reszeter

This snap of hundreds of starlings moving together in the sky above Didcot Power Station in Oxfordshire was taken by one lucky photographer who noticed that they formed some incredible shapes - including a perfect number two.

George Reszeter waited patiently in the hope of capturing something special - and he was rewarded with this image of the group of starlings - known as a murmuration.

"It was a spectacular sight - the birds appeared to come from nowhere," he said.

Murmurations can typically be seen at dusk between November and February, but the reason for these synchronised demonstrations are still unknown. Most experts believe they are a way of scaring predators off.

The RSPB reports that the number of starlings across Europe is in steep decline. Figures show that 40 million starlings have disappeared from the European Union since 1980, and a research project has been launched to discover the reason.

Together with country bird recorders, have put together a list of sites that are known to have starling roosts or those where there is a high probability before winter is over. While there's no guarantee that they will be seen (these birds tend to move around from roost to roost), you can see the list here.

Top ten things to do in BarbadosVisit Barbados

White sand beaches, glimmering blue waters and guaranteed warm weather: no wonder millions of sunseekers travel to Barbados every year. But while flying and flopping is all well and good, this Caribbean island's appeal goes far deeper than sun, sea and sand. Steeped in history, architecture and wildlife, and with arguably the friendliest locals in the region, Barbados is a fabulous place for the explorer as well as the beach bum.

The best thing about a holiday here is that you can't really get bored (unless you want to, of course. And there's really nothing wrong with lounging on the beach all day complaining that the ice in your cocktail has melted). With so much to see and do, the challenge is to fit it all in so that you feel you've got a real taste of the place

As one of the Caribbean's safest islands, the last thing you should do is lock yourself away in your resort. If you do decide to get off the beach while you're there, this is our definitive list of must-dos.

It really is a laughing hyena! Cat gets giggles on South Africa safariBridgena Barnard/Rex Features

This grinning hyena looks more than pleased to kick off 2013.

Photographer Bridgena Barnard captured the hilarious sight in South Africa's Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

She told Rex Features: "The Hyena with his Motley pattern coat entertained us like no other. A clown deluxe!

"Every time the camera clicked he juggled and gave a new pose, moving around and entertaining the photographer with absolute delight. Like a truly talented "Kings Fool", he left this laugh for last - seeming to grin from ear to ear.

"He did not wait for the encore, just disappeared in the grass like a soft breeze."

Hyenas make a variety of vocalisations, including howling screams, wailing calls, and the well-known "laughter" used to alert other clan members up to three miles away of a food source.

The giggling sounds of a hyena contain important information about the animal's status, say scientists.

A study to decipher their so-called "laugh" published in the journal BMC Ecology says the pitch of the giggle reveals a hyena's age, while variations in the frequency of notes convey information about the animal's social rank.

Two models are doing their bit to raise awareness of the plight of whale sharks - by shooting an underwater campaign with one of the ocean's most beautiful and placid creatures.

Hannah Fraser and Roberta Mancino modelled swimwear and accessories underwater with the whale sharks in Oslob, in the Philippines, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Photographer Kristian Schmidt employed the help of local fisherman to track the sharks, as they have a close bond with the animals, often feeding them in shallow waters with shrimp.

Whale sharks often grow to 30ft, with the largest confirmed being 41.5ft, and can weigh up to 21 tonnes.

It is found in warm and tropical oceans and can live for up to 70 years, but the species is under threat from human poachers.

Whale-watching tourists in Dana Point, California, got an added bonus when a 1,000-strong pod of dolphins performed a 'stampede' passed their boat.

The natural phenomenon is an incredible sight, and it was a spectacular show for passengers on board Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari.

It is not known what prompted the dolphins to converge into the large group and show off their speed and agility skills en masse directly towards the boat.

According to inquisitor.com, the dolphins were 'porpoising', the term used to describe the animals when they are engaged in their fastest mode of movement.

Passengers filmed footage of the occurrence on their mobiles and, fortunately, the boat also had an underwater camera to catch the dolphins, reports wavy.com.

According to the softpedia.com, Dana Point is home to around 450,000 dolphins, making it the area with the greatest density of the animals per square mile in the world.

And the safest airline in the world is...Stock photo: Finnair

Got a fear of flying? You might be keen to know which airline has been named the safest in the world, then...

The accolade went to Finnair in the Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre's (JACDEC) annual safety index, which measures safety in the aviation industry.

Finnair is Finland's flag carrier and is the fifth oldest airline in the world; it has had no fatal or hull-loss accidents since 1963.

Air New Zealand came in at a very respectable second place, while others in the top 10 included Cathay Pacific, Emirates, and Virgin Australia.

British Airways was the only UK airline to feature in the list, coming in at number 10.

The JACDEC says its list is "based on our annual safety calculations which include all hull loss accidents and serious incidents in the last 30 years of operations in relation to the revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) performed in the same time".

The top 10 safest airlines in the world list is:

1. Finnair
2. Air New Zealand
3. Cathay Pacific
4. Emirates
5. Etihad
6. Eva Air (Taiwan)
7. TAP (Portugal)
8. Hainan Airlines
9. Virgin Australia
10. British Airways

Easyjet names airport with best customer serviceStock photo: Getty

The whole airport experience is rarely a pleasant one for travellers. But if we have a choice, some are definitely better than others.

And Easyjet has helpfully carried out some research in order to find the airport that offers the best customer services for passengers.

The winner is London's newest airport, Southend, which garnered an overall satisfaction score of 92 per cent from passengers.

The survey questioned 26,000 passengers across Easyjet's European network. It rated airports on factors including the check-in process, boarding procedures, friendliness of airport staff and overall satisfaction.

Easyjet names Southend as airport with best customer servicePA

Southend rated highly in all categories, scoring 95 per cent for airport satisfaction, 98 per cent for the length of time at check-in a mighty 100 per cent of passengers were satisfied with the efficiency of check-in staff.

Southend Airport managing director Alastair Welch told Travel Mole: "Our Southend team works hard to ensure we deliver on our commitments to passengers - that they should wait no more than four minutes to go through security and that, on arrival with hand baggage they should be on the rail station platform within 15 minutes of leaving the aircraft.

"With the choice of up to eight trains an hour to Liverpool Street - or the current offer of free long stay parking in January and February when booked online - we hope even more passengers will choose to come and experience London's newest airport.

As for the airport with the worst-rated customer service? Unsurprisingly, Easyjet has declined to say.

Gatwick to test new snow-busting kit

Gatwick to test new snow-busting kitStock photo: Snow at Gatwick

Heard the one about the rare weather phenomenon bringing freezing temps and snow to Britain over the next couple of weeks? Yes, Gatwick obviously has, too, as airport chiefs are promising that snow-clearing capacity is now on par with Oslo.

Why? Thanks to an £8 million new "snow-busting kit", which comprises of 98 vehicles, up from the mere 47 it had two years ago.

Andy Crabb, Gatwick's airfields operations manager, explained that the airport is well-prepared for what the weather might throw at it.

He told This Is Surrey Today: "We have snow ploughs, brushes, cutters, blowers and deicing vehicles, as well as tractors.

"We have 18 'sweeper blowers' for the runway and taxiways, and six large runway anti-icing vehicles, and we can store up to 600,000 litres of anti-icing agent - twice as much as we had in 2010."

He added: "All £8 million worth of kit has arrived, been tested and is ready for use."
And there's a real crack-team of people that work around the clock to keep runways clear: during bad weather, a 66-strong team do 12-hour shifts to provide 24-hour cover and snow-free runways.

There are 120 extra staff available to call upon if the need arises, which, as there is 1.8 million square feet of runway, is always a possibility.

The new machinery isn't the only weapons against weather the airport has stocked up on; there's also 4,000 blankets, 600 mattresses, 8,000 bottles of water, 600 folding beds, 20 snow shovels and 10 travel cots in case passengers become stranded by bad weather.
So we believe Mr Crabb when he says: "We are as prepared as possible for the winter months."

And this could be put to the test over the next few days, with temperatures threatening to drop to -10C, and snow bought in by a Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW).

According to the Daily Telegraph, temperatures are set to take a nosedive, and snow could hit from tomorrow (Saturday), with around one to two centimetres of snow possibly set to fall across London and the South West, before the wintry showers head further south towards Southampton and the South Coast.

The East Coast is also likely to see a covering, while northern areas such as Lincolnshire and Yorkshire could see as much as five to seven centimetres.
