'Extraordinary' sighting of sperm whales in ScotlandNick Davies/Sea Watch

The sighting of five sperm whales off Scotland's north west coast has been described as "extraordinary" by the marine conservation charity Sea Watch.

The sperm whales - one of the true giants of the oceans - were first seen by creel fishermen between Loch Torridon and South Rona.

They initially thought they were humpback whales and alerted boat operator Nick Davies from Hebridean Whale Cruises based at Gairloch who is involved in a project collecting cetacean (whale, dolphin and porpoise) data for Sea Watch.

He went out to the location, and when he arrived was astonished to recognise sperm whales diving together for food - the first time he has ever seen them.

Dr Peter Evans, director of Sea Watch, confirmed the sighting from Mr Davies' photographs, and said their presence could be a consequence of climate change.

Dr Evans told Aol Travel:"In past decades, most records of sperm whales in British waters have been of lone adult males around Scotland mainly off the Northern Isles and the Hebrides. Increasingly, however, adolescent males have occurred in our waters, sometimes in groups of 5-10 individuals.

"Sightings of groups of sperm whales have tended to occur mainly in summer so this winter sighting of a group is notable not just for the time of year but for its inshore location. The species normally lives in waters of 1000 metres or more depth, beyond the continental shelf edge. Here they have sought out the deepest area of NW Scotland - the Inner Sound."

Dr Evans added: "The increased occurrence of winter sightings in Scottish waters could be a reflection of climate change, with their main prey, squid, becoming more abundant locally in recent years, resulting in animals staying through the winter to feed rather than travelling into lower warmer latitudes."

Sperm whales are amongst the largest mammal species in the world. Adult males can weigh in at up to 45 tonnes - the iconic London Routemaster double decker bus weighs less than 8 tons.

Nick Davies said: "I was excited at the prospect of humpback whales, but never expected to see sperm whales.

"When I was about 8 to 9 miles away I could see their spouts - it looked like a flotilla of yachts and as I got nearer it was obvious from their flukes (tails), that they were sperm whales. There was one enormous animal and four smaller ones, and they were synchronised diving, going down for 30 minutes or so at a time.

"Fishermen have been telling me that for the past four or five years they have been seeing increasing amounts of squid in their nets, and it seems that this was perfect for the sperm whale."

According to Sea Watch's national database, there have been just 94 separate sightings in British waters since 1974, with the largest group on record being of 20 animals seen off Mousa in the Shetland Islands in 2007.

Would you spend the night in Andy Murray's hotel?Cromlix House Hotel. PA

Tennis ace Andy Murray has bought a former hotel in Perthshire, near his home in Dunblane.

Murray, who already owns a number of properties in Britain and America, has made his biggest investment yet by buying the hotel, which is said to have cost nearly £2million.

According to the Independent, the 25-year-old plans to convert Cromlix House Hotel, which closed last year, into a luxury 15-room five-star hotel.

The Victorian mansion will undergo an extensive refurbishment before reopening next spring.

Unfortunately the US Open and Olympic champion won't be quitting tennis for a seat behind the reception desk as Inverlochy Castle Management International (ICMI) will manage the hotel on his behalf, the BBC reports.

Andy visited the hotel in 2010 when he was best man at the wedding of his tennis-playing brother Jamie and his wife Alejandra Gutierrez.

He said: 'I am pleased to have acquired Cromlix House and look forward to securing its future as a successful business.'

The project will create up to 40 jobs for the local community.

'By re-establishing Cromlix as a leading luxury hotel at the heart of the Dunblane community, we will be able to attract new visitors to the area, create a number of new jobs and focus on supporting other local businesses,' added Murray.

'I'm pleased to be able to give something back to the community I grew up in.'

The hotel dates back to 1874 and is set in secluded woodland within a 2,000-acre estate. Its facilities include a private chapel, making it a popular wedding venue.

Revealed! Where to buy the world's most expensive Starbucks coffee

It looks like Americans will have to pay extra for their caffeine fix in Scandinavia as The Wall Street Journal has calculated that a grande latte in Oslo, Norway will cost Americans a shocking $9.83.

The newspaper calculated their results by comparing how much a latte would cost when the dollar is converted to the local currency of 25 major cities around the world. This illustrates an economic principle called "purchasing-power parity," or, as the WSJ calls it: "A crude way to compare the relative strength of currencies."

Oslo's budget-busting price tag topped the list while Helsinki and Stockholm also appeared in the top five for most expensive Starbucks lattes. Surprisingly, Beijing came in near the middle of the table at $4.81.

New Delhi Starbucks provided the cheapest coffee at $2.80 per cup with London, Detroit, Mexico City and San Francisco also in the bottom five.

Starbucks economics seem to operate in a field of their own, as it seems it's cheaper to buy a latte in London than in New York and Atlanta, despite the fact that the dollar is relatively weak against the UK pound.

How much would you pay for a taste of home abroad?

Eight ways to be a really rubbish skier

Eight ways to be a really rubbish skierGetty

I have been skiing more times than you could shake a ski pole at. So how come I am still the world's worst skier? Every year I dazzle family, friends, instructors and random strangers by demonstrating an incredible inability to improve my skills on skis by even one teeny tiny smidge of a snowflake.

No amount of private lessons, kind words, gentle cajoling or outright swearing at me makes the blindest bit of difference. Show me a piste and I transform into a doddery old tortoise. Or a baby rhino on drugs. Or, at best, a complete liability. I have been called all three at various points (and occasionally all at once).

To help you avoid making the mistakes I make - over and over again - here's my list of what not to do on the piste, compiled from years and years of painful experience.

Don't:

1. Grind to a standstill and start to weep uncontrollably on a green/blue/red/black run because it looks too steep. Tears and snot and shaking limbs on the piste are undignified and can attract unwelcome comments. No matter what your instincts tell you, stopping, I have discovered, is the last thing you should ever do.

2. Crash into your ski instructor. I'm good at this one - but this year I was beaten to it by an out-of-control snowboarder (is there any other kind?), who managed to career into the back of my guide, doing a clever kind of somersault in the process. The boarder ended up being beaten to a pulp by my instructor, who was so enraged that he laid into him with his ski poles. This caused other people to pile in. Cue mass punch-up in the Courchevel badlands.

3. Hold hands with your ski instructor. Even if it's supposedly to help you turn without crashing off the side of a mountain, this can have disastrous consequences. It can also make your boyfriend/girlfriend well jel and cause bitter remarks for years afterwards. Trust me on this.

4. Believe you've got "the nack" of getting on a ski lift. There is a very high probability that you will be next to someone who lacks any coordination whatsoever (you know who you are) which means you will end up collapsed under the chair with your derriere in the air while the buffoon glides away on the lift looking completely innocent.

5. Try to impress your kids. You may think you're rather good at skiing backwards while doing frisky little jumps, but I promise you: they won't agree.

6. Sit down on the middle of the piste. Yes, your legs may feel like they're permanently stuck in a torture rack, but resting on your laurels on the go is a no-no. It's schuss or die.

7. Feel for just one tiny moment that you finally know how to ski. You may think you look like Victoria Beckham gliding effortlessly down the piste. In reality, friends/family/kids/random strangers will always be on hand to snigger and ask you if you have been drinking.

8. Try to do clever zig-zags on narrow paths. This creates furious traffic jams and, on occasions, triggers the necessity for stretchers and expensive helicopter rescues.

So there you have it. Obviously it was tricky narrowing down my list; I could go on but I don't want to wear you out. But if you're a rubbish skier too, please feel free to add your suggestions in the comments below. In the meantime, here's a video of a few rather majestic ski failures, just to make you feel better.

Australians moan about Welsh beach being named 10th best in the world

Australians moan about Welsh beach being named 10th best in the worldRhossili Bay: Getty

Rhossili Bay, 5km stretch of beach in Swansea, was recently named the 10th best beach in the world in a Tripadvisor poll.

And, while we're sure the Welsh were very pleased with that accolade, some people weren't so happy: the disgruntled Aussies.

In a feature written by Anthony Sharwod on The Australian website, entitled "YOU'RE JOKING: This British beach is NOT better than ours", the writer starts off by describing the beach as a "strip of mud-coloured sand". A direct contrast to the Daily Telegraph's description of it as "unspoilt yellow sands".

The article then goes on to make the case for why Australia's beaches are better, and basically say it beggars belief that a beach in Wales would make the world's top 10.

Australians moan about Welsh beach being named 10th best in the worldRhossili Bay: Getty

It reads: "Only one Aussie Beach, Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays, made the list. That was one insult. But we simply could not believe it when we discovered a beach in south Wales on the list.

"No, not a beach in New South Wales. Not the perfect rolling breakers of Bondi or the gleaming white sands of Hyams Beach, two hours south of Sydney.

"We're talking about a beach in south Wales, UK. As in, she sells sea shells by the Welsh sea shore."

They even rang a local, Julian Short, the 71-year-old proprietor of the Worm's Head Hotel in the village of Rhossili overlooking the beach, to see if he agreed.

Mr Short said: "I don't know if I'd say it's one of the best beaches in in the world, but it's quite attractive really.

"The sand is soft and there are downs (rolling grassy hills) behind the beach running up about 600 feet or so."

Mr Sharwood suggests that's very nice and all, but he'd rather see "swaying palms".

Australians moan about Welsh beach being named 10th best in the worldRhossili Bay: Getty

Rhossili Bay was praised for its food, surfing and scenery, and Sharwood notes the fact the water remains shallow a long way off-shore as a plus.

But then points out that the current day water temperature is around 6C, and suggests,"you swim here if you've always wanted to be an icicle", adding: "Summer is not much better. The water at Rhossili hovers between 14 and 18 degrees in the British summer, which is cooler than Bondi in midwinter."

The writer also points out that Mr Short himself had never once been for a dip in the sea in his 71 years in the region, and holidays once a year in Dubai for the sun and the warm waters of the Arabian sea.

Australians moan about Welsh beach being named 10th best in the worldHyams Beach, Australia: Getty

One thing they did give us? A point for the grub. The article read: "If there's one area where this Welsh beach possibly trumps Australia's, it's the food."

Mr Short, who they admit, is a "strong advocate" of the bay's appeal, said: "You can get fresh cod and chips here, and people often come in to pick up a bag of pasties to take down to the beach for lunch. They usually stay for a pint or two while we warm them up."

But when asked whether his perfect beach holiday would be at home or somewhere like Australia, he said: "I would probably go to your beaches. Let's be honest, how on earth would anyone not prefer Bondi Beach with those gorgeous girls?"

What do you think? Is this a serious case of Aussie sour grapes? Or do they have a point?

Cute video alert: Seal jumps out of River Thames to play with dog

London's River Thames isn't normally the place you'd go if you were hoping to spot a seal.

So imagine this dog walker's surprise when one popped out of the water right next to her as she walked her dog in Greenwich.

This video, taken by dog owner Nicola White, shows the young Harbour seal leaping out of the water onto the river path. While her golden retriever Mischa was rather cautious at first, the animals soon appeared to be smitten with each other, and proceeded to enjoy a jolly game of hide-and-seek.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Nicola's partner David Nolan, who was with her, said he noticed an ID tag on the seal and discovered that it had been raised by people at the RCPCA seal sanctuary in East Winch, Norfolk.

"The RSPCA really deserve recognition for what they do. This young seal proves that their hard work has paid off."

Just two weeks ago, tourists in London were left amazed when they spotted a pod of dolphins swimming up the River Thames.

Guess what you can't do at Berlin's brand new airport....PA

Berlin's newest airport may have been hit by many problems recently, but one thing they don't need to worry about is lack of lighting - because it can't be switched off.

The lights burn day and night at Brandenburg Airport - which will eventually become Berlin International Airport - because workers on the site have no means to of stopping them.

Technical director Horst Amann told German news service Spiegel.de: "We haven't progressed far enough with our lighting system that we can control it."

The airport has been under construction since 2005, but has battled with numerous technical glitches including problems with safety equipment.

Sky News reports that the cost of the project has already doubled original estimates, now standing at £3.7billion.

The problems at the airport mean that a date has still not been set for its opening.

The Daily Mail reports that even after an 11-hour flight the pair didn't let jet lag stop them on their trip to see the most famous landmarks.

Four-year old Honor got into the French spirit wearing a beret and a yellow neckerchief, looking like a true Parisian.

The pair were accompanied by Jessica's make-up artist Lauren Anderson and stopped on Place du Trocadero to buy crepes from an outdoor seller.

US Magazine reports that the mother-daughter duo jetted into Paris on Friday for Paris Fashion Week and Honor was photographed at Charles-de-Gaulle Airport hand-in hand with her mum holding a hot drink cup.

Jessica soon took to Twitter and wrote: 'Bonjour #Paris #girls-trip! W @lauren_andersen & my big girl! (sic)'.

The mum-of-two has previously spoken about how she loves travelling the world with her family.

She said on The View: 'Having them travel with me and exposing them to the cultures is amazing. I feel so blessed that I can do that. And I want my four-year-old to know please, thank you, and hello in every language, so I drill it into her head everywhere we go. She learns it and she's really polite about it.'

Earlier this winter, the actress treated Honor to a holiday in London and took her ice skating at the Natural History Museum.

Last year the family of four travelled to Tokyo in Japan and the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
