Residents in a Gloucestershire village got a rather smelly surprise when it appeared to start raining seaweed.
Streets, homes, and gardens were covered in the marine algae after stormy weather apparently picked it up and carried it from Clevedon Beach, 20 miles away.
Extreme weather conditions likely created a tornado that picked up the seaweed from the beach in North Somerset, carrying it all the way to Berkeley, near Cheltenham.
One resident, Dr Richard Overton, 55, and his wife Kay, managed to pick up a whole bucket of the green slime from their front garden.
He told the Telegraph: "I looked out of the window after a very big storm finished and to my amazement there were lots of flakes of seaweed scattered over the garden.
"I've heard stories of fish being picked up and dumped by storms but never seaweed. I was just so surprised."
Weather expert, Ian Fergusson, from the Met Office, described how the incident could have been caused by thunderstorms on Clevedon Beach.
He told the Telegraph: "At the same time as this incident was reported there were several thunderstorms in the area, one of which pictured by satellites on a nearby beach.
"If one of the funnel clouds touched down onto the beach, making it a tornado, it could have quite possible picked up the seaweed and other debris if the tide was out and then later dumped it down the road at Berkeley Heath.
"It is a very strange event but it is possible. Look out for fish in your garden too!"
Airport officials decided to cover it after passengers in international departures complained, but they have now changed their minds and decided to display it.
John Leighton, director-general of the National Galleries of Scotland, told the BBC: "It is obviously bizarre that all kinds of images of women in various states of dress and undress can be used in contemporary advertising without comment, but somehow a painted nude by one of the world's most famous artists is found to be disturbing and has to be removed.
"I hope that the public will come and see the real thing, which is a joyous and affectionate portrait of one of Picasso's favourite models, an image that has been shown around the world."
An Edinburgh Airport spokesperson said: "We have now reviewed our original decision and reinstated the image.
"The initial decision was a reaction to passenger feedback, which we do always take seriously.
"However on reflection we are more than happy to display the image in the terminal and we'd like to apologise, particularly to the exhibition organisers, for the confusion."
The Picasso and Modern British Art exhibition runs until 4 November.
"I was waiting quite a while before anyone actually said anything and then they asked me why I had a hand grenade in my luggage and I was totally shocked.
"I had no idea what they were talking about and then I realised it was my fragrance. The next thing I know I am surrounded by police and I just felt really panicked."
After the Viktor & Rolf bottle was taken away for testing for around 45 minutes, and it was confirmed it was, in fact, just an aftershave, Mr Ho was released and allowed to board his flight.
He added: "Thinking back now I guess it was really silly and I think the design of the bottom is really bad considering.
"I guess at the end of the day it is an airport and it's a good thing that they do all these checks."
Panicked passengers reportedly mistook the words 'mom on board' for 'bomb on board' (far easier to do with the American accent and spelling), on the flight from Baltimore to Long Island.
Holidaymakers at a popular tourist beach in Wales were told to stay out of the water after RNLI lifeguards spotted a shark in the sea.
According to the BBC, red flags were raised on New Quay beach in Ceredigion on Tuesday and the beach was temporarily closed.
The shark swam between boats moored at the end of the beach.
It is believed the animal was a blue shark, a species that grows up to 12.5ft long, and prefers cooler waters.
The blue shark primarily feeds on fish and squid, but have been known to attack humans; since 2009, 13 attacks on humans have been recorded and four fatalities.
The RNLI said it would be very rare to see a shark that close to the shoreline in the area.

Out of the world's 2,000 species of snake, around 250 are thought to be capable of killing a man. The Asian cobra does not have the deadliest venom, but is believed to be responsible for the biggest portion of the thousands of snakebite deaths every year. In Africa, the black mamba is the largest venomous snake and, during an attack, can strike up to 12 times, each time delivering enough neuro and cardio-toxic venom to kill a dozen men within 1 hour.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 50-125,000 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> A snake will use its fangs to pierce the skin and inject its paralysing venom.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Africa, Asia, Australia, North America</p>

Many people might not realise that the cape buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals in Africa, and will react with force when it feels threatened. These beasts can weigh up to 1.5 tons and stand at 1.7 metres high; they're so intimidating that even lions don't usually consider them dinner. Cape buffalos will charge, and then gore its victim to death with its impressive horns.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 200 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> These animals will charge and gore their victims to death with their huge horns.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Africa</p>
<p>
Crocodiles have been around for 200 million years, and are fearsome predators. The saltwater crocodile, or saltie, is the largest living reptile in the world, and can grow up to 21ft long and weigh 1.6 tons. These animals can run extremely fast on land, and, in the water, can swim as fast as dolphin. Many fatalities occur when people are washing or gathering food near river banks.<br />
<strong>Kills: </strong>An estimated 600-800 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Crocodiles will grab their victims with terrifying speed, and often launch into a 'death roll', weakening its prey, dragging it under water and drowning the victim.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Africa and Australia</p>
<p>
Weighing in at up to eight tons, although beautiful creatures, elephants can be lethal. African elephants in particular can be aggressive, especially older bulls and young males. These creatures, unsurprisingly, are more aggressive in areas where poaching is rife or when their habitat is threatened.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 300-500 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique: </strong>Most human deaths are result of the elephant trampling on its victim.<br />
<strong>Lives in: </strong>Africa and India</p>
<p>
Although they might look cumbersome and cute, hippos are actually one of the most feared animals in Africa, and can outrun a human. When a male feels its territory is threatened, or a female thinks her offspring her in danger, these animals can be particularly dangerous. And with huge teeth and mouth that can open four feet wide, it's a good idea to steer clear.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 100-150 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Hippos will charge, trample and gore its victims, and have been known to upturn boats and canoes without warning.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Africa</p>
<p>
African lions are the biggest of the big cats, and are known to kill around 70 people in Tanzania alone every year. With the destruction of their habitat, human attacks by leopards in India, and the North American mountain lion are thought to be on the increase.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 800 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> African lions will often use strangulation to kill their prey, while tigers will attack from the back and aim for the jugular, and mountain lions will maul their victims.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Africa, North America, and India</p>
<p>
Apart from humans, the mosquito is the deadliest creature on the planet. It kills millions of people every year through the spread of diseases like malaria, yellow fever, and dengue fever. Many of the malaria victims are children under the age of five.<br />
<strong>Kills: </strong>Two to three million people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Female mosquitos pierce the skin with serrated mouth parts, and inject a saliva with a thinning agent to liquidise the blood.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Worldwide, more harmful in Africa, Asia and North America</p>
<p>
The are lots of different species of bear, but the polar, black and grizzly are the deadliest. Native to the Arctic, polar bears could decapitate a human being with one swipe of their massive paws. Bears generally attack when they are hungry, so it's a good idea to keep food away from your camp.<br />
<strong>Kills: </strong>An estimated 5 to 10 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Bear will use their teeth and claws to maul and trample their victims.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> North America, Canada, North Pole, and Russia.</p>
<p>
Out of the 1,500 species of scorpion, the African spitting scorpion is thought to be the most deadly, and can spray its venom up to a metre. Arounf 25 species of scorpion are thought to be deadly to humans.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 800-2,000 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Scorpions use their tail stingers to paralyse their prey with venom.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Worldwide; particularly Africa, the Americas and Central Asia.</p>
<p>
The great white shark, which can grow up to six metres in length and weigh up to five tons, seems to have the most ferocious reputation. But, while they have been known to attack humans, most of these incidents are thought to be 'test bites', where the animal is deciphering whether he wants to eat you. And, generally, they humans are not on the menu. It is thought the aggressive bull shark is responsible for the most attacks on people. Out of the 360 shark species, only four are known killers: the great white, the bull, tiger, and the oceanic white tip.<br />
<strong>Kills:</strong> An estimated 100 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Sharks use their razor-sharp teeth to rip chunks out of its victims. Great whites usually take a big single bite, drag their victims into deeper waters, and wait until the prey bleeds to death before they eat it.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Florida, Australia, Hawaii and South Africa.</p>
<p>
Box jellyfish can have up to 60 tentacles as long as 15 feet. And each tentacle contains enough venom to kill 50 humans, making it one of the most venomous marine creatures in the world. If stung, a box jellyfish can kill a man within minutes.<br />
<strong>Kills: </strong>An estimated 100 people a year.<br />
<strong>Deadly technique:</strong> Jellyfish use their tentacles to pump venom and paralyse its prey. Deaths in humans are usually a result of cardiac arrest.<br />
<strong>Lives in:</strong> Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.</p>
An Australian tourist is lucky to be alive after her boat was "written off" by an iceberg wave. Scroll down to see the video
Sarah Williams, from Adelaide, was viewing a glacier on board a fisherman's boat when a wall of ice crashed down into the water.
During the video, Sarah explains: "It was a terrifying experience, I thought I was close to the end.
"I was a bit tense beforehand because I could hear the cracking, it sounded like gunshots going off. I could sense the tension, but I don't think any of us expected such a massive chunk to come down.
"The boat was a write off; the wave hit the boat, the ice was pelting down, a lot of water came in. It was taking on water because we we were driving away very quickly and the boat was hitting the ice as we were driving away. It was pretty dramatic."
Sarah missed the tourist boat, so decided to hire a local fishing vessel to take her to the glacier.
"I was determined to get to this glacier, I'd come all the way from Australia so I wasn't about to miss it
Ryanair are set to send free (yes, you read that correctly) text alerts to passengers to inform that about flight delays over 90 minutes.
Passengers will be asked to provide their mobile number to make use of the service, and will receive texts advising about likely durations of delays and new departure times.
Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said the move comes after a study found around 95 per cent of airline passengers carried mobile phones while travelling.
He told the Irish Times: "Our new system will ensure passengers are kept fully informed during periods of mass disruption, such as bad weather, air traffic control strikes or airspace closures."
According to Howard Millar, Ryanair's deputy chief executive, bigger doors will allow people to board and disembark more quickly, shaving time off the all-important turnarounds.
Other recent Ryanair ideas that haven't gone down as well include: scrapping the role of co-pilot, letting passengers stand on shorter flights, removing two of the three on-board loos on their Boeing 737s to make room for more passengers, and introducing coin-operated toilets.

A Norwegian tourist fell asleep on a Rome airport baggage belt and travelled through a secure area before being discovered by officials on an X-ray scanner.
The unnamed 36-year-old arrived at Rome's Fiumicino airport to board a flight back to Oslo.
But, when he arrived at the check-in desk, he found it empty, and decided to jump over the counter for a snooze on the baggage belt.
He travelled 160ft in 15 minutes through the secure baggage area in Terminal 3 before being spotted curled up in a ball on the X-ray screens.
He was asleep the entire time, and airport police even had trouble waking him up.
An officer with Fiumicino airport police told the Telegraph: "There's usually an episode like this once a year and we are alert.
"In this case we were notified we sounded the alarm immediately and we took action."
Police took the man to a nearby hospital before reporting him prosecutors at Civitavecchia for causing alarm at the airport.
In danger of falling asleep at the airport? Make it one of these:
Designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, Bilbao's main airport terminal is known as "the dove". Frommer's describes it thus: "sharply-canted curves and lots of light streaming through, and bisected by, ribs which resemble cables."</p>
<p>
Designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, this spacious, modern terminal boasts "by far the best airport food court in New York". Frommer's also calls it "one of the greatest icons of the mid-20th century jet age." Praise indeed.</p>
<p>
This huge, light-filled terminal, with its expansive spaces and undulating ceilings, was designed by Richard Rogers and Antonio Lamela and went on to win the RIBA Stirling Prize for architecture in 2006. "This is an unusually intelligently designed terminal... Even when the terminal is full it never feels oppressively crowded," says Frommer's.</p>
<p>
This airport looks has been compared to a Moroccan palace, twenty-first century style, with classic Islamic geometric and nature motifs inscribed into a giant network of concrete diamonds. "You could make a strong argument that the whole thing is one giant artwork," says Frommer's in its review.</p>
<p>
Praise is lavished on this airport, not least for its entertainment factor. "Seoul's secret is to make sure that you're never more than a few steps away from an entertaining, elightening or amusing bit of Korean culture," says Frommer's. Scattered throughout, you'll find hands-on Korean craft workshops, a dress-up area where you can take photos in traditional clothing, plus "the best free internet cafes you've ever seen, a museum, and plenty of places to take a comfortable nap."</p>
<p>
Is this an airport or an amusement park? Home to a butterfly garden, an 18ft waterfall, a huge indoor playground, a movie theatre, TV lounges and a huge four-storey spiral slide "that's a lot more fun than taking the elevator," says Frommer's. There's even an outdoor swimming pool...</p>
<p>
This rugged, artistically constructed airport terminal has also been named the world's ugliest - but it's all a matter of taste. Opened last year, the Rock's egg-shaped buildings covered in copper is designed to turn blue-green in the sea air. Says Frommer's: "Inside, curving corners and geometric panels play peekaboo." Very posh.</p>
<p>
Montevideo's airport terminal, designed by Rafael Vinoly, is described by Frommer's as "a smooth dome, looking from the front a bit like a whale's mouth; inside, lines are smooth, clean and calm, with grand terraces overlooking the runways and arrival areas."</p>
<p>
This airport is unique in many ways. For a start, it's only active diring the "hajj" - the pilgrimage to Mecca for Muslims. During this period, it's one of the busiest airport terminals in the world. According to <a href="http://archrecord.construction.com/features/aiaAwards/10_25YearAward.asp" target="_blank">Architectural Record</a>, it is made of 210 open-air white fibreglass tents which create a chimney effect that can cool the scorching desert air by 50 degrees without air conditioning. It received the American Institue of Architects 25-year award.</p>

She might be a gold medal-winning heptathlon Olympics champion, but Jessica Ennis proved she's just like the rest of us really - by revealing plans to read Fifty Shades of Grey on a well-earned beach holiday.
The athlete revealed she's going to treat herself to a lazy post-Olympics beach break, where she plans to read the entire EL James trilogy.
According to contactmusic.com, Jessica told the Evening Standard: "We're going to book a holiday. Somewhere on a beach, really quiet, and just do nothing and read a book. I'm going to read Fifty Shades of Grey.
"All my friends and literally everyone I speak to is reading it. So I'm going to buy all three of them and read them on holiday."
And she's definitely not the only star getting her nose into the steamy book; Eva Longoria, Selena Gomez and Kristen Stewart have all been spotted enjoying the saucy story.

Footage from inside the cockpit of a light plane shows the moment the aircraft came crashing down into a forest in the US.
All of the four hikers on board miraculously escaped with their lives, with reports suggesting the pilot suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
The plane was on its way in to the mountains of Idaho to visit the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area.
But, according to The Sun, warm temperatures resulted in an increase of density altitude, which prevented the plane to get enough height.
Then, the plane hits an air pocket and starts to plunge to the ground, smashing through trees on its way.
According to the Herald Sun, one of the survivors wrote on YouTube: "After flying up into the mountains for a hike in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness we were planning on flying to a small mountain town for dinner.
"Due to warming temperatures we had a hard time gaining altitude. After taking off we hit an air pocket that made us rapidly lose altitude, pushing us down into the trees.
"The cameras were left on for a couple of hours during the aftermath. Thank you to all the many individuals who eventually came to our aid and took the time and effort to help in any way they could."
When you're travelling with a young family, it's important for everyone to sit together - or at least close by.
But now some package holiday firms are charging families more than £80 just so that two adults and two children can do so.
The Express reports that the charge comes on top of fuel surcharges, tax and fees for using credit cards.
Consumer watchdog Which? found that, on a long-haul flight, if a family of four flies with Thomson, the cost of booking their seats can add £84 to the cost of their flight, or £80 if they are flying with Cosmos or Thomas Cook.
For medium-haul flights, it costs £70 with Thomson, £60 with Thomas Cook and £48 with Cosmos.
This drops to £44 with Thomson for short-haul flights, and £40 with Thomas Cook. Cosmos charges £48.
The move has provoked strong criticism, especially as official guidelines issued by the Civil Aviation Authority say that children and infants should "ideally be seated in the same seat row as the adult".
In response to the survey, Cosmos said that it's policy is to try and sit families together and Thomson and Thomas Cook said that they do their best to sit families together but cannot guarantee it unless they pay the extra charge.
However, even paying the extra charge does not guarantee that a parent can sit next to their child as Thomson says that a family paying the fee might be "in front, behind or across the aisle" from each other.
Chris Gray, assistant travel editor at Which?, said: "I think these charges are wrong. They unnecessarily bump up the price of holidays at a time when many families are struggling to pay for holiday breaks at all.
"Why should airlines and tour operators charge so much for a service they should offer as standard?
"It is common sense for airlines to put children with their parents. After all, if you are off on holiday without children, the last thing you want is to be seated next to a six-year-old who's upset at being separated from their parents."

An angler from Dagenham, Essex has told how he was left battered and bruised after he caught a 13ft Thresher shark off the coast of Looe, Cornwall.
The Daily Mail reports that Martin Roberts, 49, was shark fishing with friends on a 32ft catamaran, 20 miles off the coast.
The 350lb shark is one of the biggest ever caught in British waters, and Mr Roberts and his five-strong crew had to struggle to pull in into the boat.
Although these sharks are not man-eaters, feeding mainly on schools of fish in shallow waters, according to the Daily Mail, they can decapitate a man with a swipe of the tail.
Mr Roberts told the Daily Mail: "My arms were shaking for days after the tussle - it was an incredible couple of hours.
"The shark gave me the fight of my life - it just wouldn't give in and it was in total control.
"It tugged me around the boat four times and took up around 700 metres of my line. I am all bruised up and feel worn out. But what a fish to catch."
He added: "As soon as I felt the first tug on my rod I knew it must be quite a big fish.
"After an hour and a half, with help from everyone on board, we eventually managed to pull the shark through the hatch door on the back of the boat."
After taking pictures, the crew threw the shark back into the sea.
Mr Roberts said: "Everyone would love to say they caught a shark that size and I have been lucky enough to do it. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
"We always let the sharks go - and especially after what had happened that morning. I had no reason to kill it - it gave me the best sport of my life. We got back and the whole town was celebrating."
Hilary Casson, secretary of the Shark Angling Club of Great Britain, said: "It is extremely rare to catch a Thresher shark - especially one of that size. It is a huge shark. I don't think one has been landed of Looe since the 1960s."

An empty yacht, found drifting just six miles from the Sizewell nuclear plant (pictured) on the Suffolk coast, has sparked an international police alert.
The Daily Mail reports that the 28ft vessel was towed to Orford Quay, where a UK Border Force investigation began.
Security has been tight during the Olympics, so there were originally fears that the boat could have been part of a terrorist operation. However, officials now believe that it's more likely that it was used to smuggle drugs or illegal immigrants into Britain.
There have been no reports of missing or stolen yachts and UK Border Force officials are still investigating.
Local historial Stuart Bacon told the Daily Mail: "It is an absolute mystery - there are no identification markings on the boat at all and no clues in the cabin, which is very clean and tidy.
"There is a lot of speculation that it may have been carrying drugs but it could also be a case of a lone sailor falling overboard and his boat drifting off.
"There were apparently Dutch sea charts on board so the yacht could even have drifted across the North Sea."
Today's sunshine could be the last we see for a while, as the rain is expected to return tomorrow.
We've had a sunny weekend - and the weather has been better than expected for the last two weeks during the Olympics.
But the Daily Mail reports that forecasters predict rain for tomorrow, with temperatures dropping by around 10C, to an average of 16C.
According to the Met Office, heavy rain is expected across most of the country tomorrow, and there could be thunder and lightening in the west midlands and south west on Tuesday.
The weather looks likely to be unsettled for the rest of the week, with heavy rain and brighter periods along with humid nights.
The forecast for the rest of the month suggests that this will continue as we head into September, although there will be some drier and brighter periods. However, the Met Office warns that "a return to largely settled, warm and sunny weather looks unlikely."
So any hopes of an Indian Summer are likely to be dashed - and the changeable weather means we'll have to keep carrying suncream and umbrellas if we don't want to get caught out.

That remote cliffside spot overlooking the ocean might seem lovely on a sunny afternoon but it might not seem that way in gail force winds at 3am. By all means look for a pitch with a good view - the beauty of camping is that it can afford you a location that not even the best hotels can beat - but never underestimate the value of a sheltered spot. Ever.</p>
<p>
A desperate dash across an enormous muddy field in the dead of night is enough to put you off camping for life (we're speaking from experience) - so anticipate the call of nature before you bed down for the night, or make sure the loos aren't a long trek from where you'll be calling home.</p>

Technically speaking a camping trip ought to be gadget free to allow you to unplug and get back to nature. But an ipod loaded with bedtime stories is a brilliant way to lull little kids to sleep under canvas and the <a href="http://www.soundasleeppillow.co.uk">Sound Asleep kids speaker pillow</a> is a genius invention for helping them chill out when it's time to bed down.</p>
<p>
Some campsites offer free hot showers all day long, others at set times of the day, and some will charge you an arm and leg for a luke-warm six second shower. It pays to know what you're in for before you're half naked, shower gel poised.</p>
<p>
Word up for glow-in-the-dark toilet roll. We're not joking - it's wonderful stuff, and not just for the purpose for which is what intended, either. What other practical camping accessory can help you find your way out of your sleeping bag in the dead of night? <a href="http://www.glow.co.uk/glow-in-the-dark-toilet-roll.html">glow.co.uk</a></p>
<p>
Little treats - like fresh coffee or a decent bottle of Scotch - are essentials for a relaxing camping adventure. it's tempting to leave such things out when every square inch of the car is packed with camping accoutrements - but don't. You'll thank us for this.</p>
<p>
Old-fashioned family pursuits like playing card games come into their own on camping trips, helping you unwind and rediscover simple pleasures, far from the distractions of the digital age. Try Uno for all-age family fun.</p>
<p>
Plan your food, and don't forget to figure out how you're going to cook it. Check out the Cool Camping Cookbook for inspiration and remember that eating outdoors is one of the true pleasures of sleeping under the stars. And don't forget the marshmallows for the campfire.</p>
<p>
If it's not fun you're doing it wrong, so try not to stress about midges, the lack of en-suite facilities or the state of the showers or the fact that it's er, raining again. Remember - it's an experience. And you're making memories - so make 'em good ones!</p>
<p>
Not all campsites are created equal, and a shabby site can make the difference between a brilliant camping holiday and a disaster. Do some proper research into the facilities, and pay close attention to what other campers have to say about the site. Check out the <a href="http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk">Camping and Caravanning Club</a> for reliable guides to sites across the UK.</p>

When we're asked to picture the perfect beach, most of us would think of clear blue water gently lapping white sands.
So it's little wonder that locals find it hard to resist taking a dip in the lake on Harpur Hill in The Peak District - known locally as the Blue Lagoon.
But the Daily Mail reports that this water-filled disused quarry (pictured) is actually a toxic heath hazard - and visitors are ignoring warning signs explaining that the high pH levels mean that the water is almost as powerful as amonia or bleach.
Signs warn that the polluted water can cause skin and eye irritations, stomach problems, fungal infections and rashes - and that it's known to contain car wrecks, dead animals, excrement and rubbish.
Nevertheless, the Daily Mail reports that parents have been taking their children to swim in the lake, even though beer cans, glass and plastic bottles, condoms and syringes have been spotted near the water's edge.
Although the water looks inviting, the turquoise blue colour is caused by the surrounding limestone rocks, which leach chemicals into the water.
In March last year, an anonymous post appeared on a blog about the Blue Lagoon which read: "I went down last summer, it's quality, however it's only so blue because it's limestone water, I had a good swim - my misses only had a paddle. I was probably in for an hour. On the drive home I felt numb all over. Not sure it was such a good idea now.
"It was one of the hottest days when I went last year, and the water was still freezing, at the end of day it's a disused quarry and it's stupidly deep.
"The water's littered with cars and large sharp objects and you sink into the lime sand stuff and can get stuck easily.
"My opinion, I loved it, I'm going to go again, but be warned - it's a very dangerous place."
Now that the Blue Lagoon is becoming something of a tourist attraction, the county council are looking at ways to clean up the area.
The Daily Mail reports that Pam Reddy, the area's county councillor, said: "Both councils are pursuing different possible long-term solutions with possible permanent solutions being the quarry being drained or filled in.
"Before this can be considered and undertaken full research has to be completed on flood risk and site drainage and then a full planning application would need to be completed and submitted."
Councillor Carol Hart, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Public Health, added: "I would just like to assure residents that at Derbyshire County Council we are doing all we can to help resolve this real problem. It is complicated by the fact that this is private land but nevertheless we will continue to work to come up with a solution to tackle this awful situation."

<p>
White, yellow, brown and even black are all common sand colours – but pink? Three miles long, gentle and wonderfully wide, this otherwise textbook Bahamanian cove is a weird Barbie-colour due to microscopic coral insects called foraminifera: when they die, they considerately leave their pink shells behind to be crushed into the sand by waves. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> This one’s easy – <a href="http://www.holidaysplease.co.uk/" target="_blank">holidaysplease.co.uk</a> suggests holing up at the boutique and adjacent Pink Sands Resort, complete with 25 pastel-coloured cottages. </p>
<p>
Oh, and sand also comes green, too. There are two green beaches in the world: one is on the remote Western Pacific island of Guam, and the other is this Hawaiian oddity on Big Island. The reason for the strange shade is, in this case, olivine crystals; the result is a shore that looks like a grass verge. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> The quirky Big Island B&B is Hawaiian-owned and full of local charm, set in an elegant old plantation house. </p>
<p>
Set on the Coromandel Peninsula, this strip offers the seaside equivalent of under-floor heating. Subterranean hot springs filter up through the sand, and either side of low tide, visitors can burrow down and create their own hot-water pool in which to soak. It's a sort of peculiar, DIY thermal-bath experience. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> For proximity, try the Hot Water Beach Park on Hot Water Beach Road. For a dash more luxury not too far distant, <a href="http://www.holidaysplease.co.uk/" target="_blank">Holidaysplease.co.uk</a> suggests the historic Whitianga Hotel, set on the town’s pretty marina.</p>
<p>
If you like a little aviation action with your beach holiday, this is ideal. Set just a fence away from one of the Princess Juliana International Airport’s runways, Maho is perfect for watching huge Boeings swooping in to land. As you’d expect, the cove has become a planespotter’s pilgrimage; its Sunset Beach Bar even reportedly has a speaker that broadcasts transmissions between pilots and the airport's control tower. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> The right room at the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort allows you to watch Boeings from your bed, or jumbos from the Jacuzzi... </p>
<p>
Then again, any self-respecting aviation beach-buff knows that Maho doesn’t even compare to Barra, in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides – for here, the beach is also the runway. Twin Otters from Glasgow and Benbecula land directly on the wide sand of Traigh Mhor – or at least they do when the tide is out. Yep – it’s a pop-up airport. On a cloudy day (this is the Outer Hebrides, after all…), additional light is provided by vehicles in the car park. <strong>Fancy staying here? </strong>To get really close to the aviation action, try the Eoligarry self-catering cottage. </p>
<p>
Sprawling Loango extends to miles of pristine beach, enabling animals including elephants, buffalos, wild pigs, gorillas and ‘surfing hippos’ taking a dip in the ocean. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> Try the coast-side Loango Lodge. It's advisible to leave your own trunks at home and just watch these strange swimming spectacles from the safety of the shore. </p>

<p>
The madness of Goa's Cow Beach sees heifers hurdle and bulls blundering in search of a tasty lunch, with cattle generally sprawled on the brown sand while working on their tans. Despite the inevitable sanitary issues, the beach remains full of human visitors, too. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> There are actually a few beaches in Goa frequented by cows, but the classic is Palolem, between Gokarna and Majorda. <a href="http://www.holidaysplease.co.uk/" target="_blank">Holidaysplease.co.uk</a> recommends the SwaSwara Resort in Gokarna; it’s a bit hippie and holistic, but also peaceful and luxurious.</p>
<p>
How about a beach that sounds like a dog? The squeaky golden grains on Hawaii’s Barking Sands Beach emit a canine-like sound when rubbed. This is a phenomenon caused by a particular kind of quartz, and is actually present on beaches in the British Isles; but Barking Sands ramps the weirdness factor up numerous notches by also housing a rocket-launch site. Oh, and a missile-defence testing centre. There’s barking, and there’s barking mad. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> Real devotees will hole up at the Barking Sands Beach Cottages Resort, which are part of the Missile Range and thus very, very close by – the only small snag being that you need to have served the US military to get digs here...</p>

For much of the 1900s, locals in the coastal California town of Fort Bragg threw rubbish onto their local shoreline, a place known subtly as ‘The Dumps’. In 1967, the area was closed for a long, gradual clean-up; one aided, in part, by the ocean’s waves wearing down all the leftover glass into smooth, multi-coloured trinkets. ‘Glass Beach’ reopened in 2002 as part of the MacKerricher State Park, and is now a confirmed tourist attraction. <strong>Fancy staying here? </strong>The closest accommodation is the Glass Beach Inn, a dainty B&B, but as Fort Bragg is rather lacking in opulence, try the Heritage House Inn, 37 attractive seafront acres around an ivy-coloured main building in Little River.</p>
<p>
Take the perfect white-sand beach of clichéd brochure covers, imagine the complete opposite and you’ll have some idea of what Punaluu looks like. It’s rocky, cold-watered and entirely black, its basalt sand being the product of ancient volcanic lava cooled by the sea. All of which seems to appeal to endangered Hawksbill turtles, who are regular frequenters of this curious cove. <strong>Fancy staying here?</strong> Sea Mountain Resort has a collection of condos and cottage-style ‘apartments’. There’s also an 18-hole golf course adjacent while just up the road is Kilauea, considered the most active volcano in the world...</p>

British tourists are being urged to stay in touch with the Foreign Office as wildfires rage in the Canary Islands, forcing the evacuation of thousands of residents, reports the Press Association.
Fires on the Canary islands of La Gomera and Tenerife, both favourites among UK holidaymakers, have led to the evacuation of more than 4,000 residents and the cutting off of many roads as precautionary measures, the regional government said.
As of Sunday afternoon, residents were being kept out of 18 towns and villages - eight on Tenerife and 10 on La Gomera. The fires are also threatening some of Spain's most treasured national parks, including a Unesco world heritage site.

The Foreign Office said it is keeping a close eye on developments. A spokesman said: "We are aware of the reports, which we are monitoring closely and we are advising British nationals to stay in touch."
Regional officials said there was evidence that the fire on La Gomera was started deliberately as it had two focal points two miles apart that began burning within a short time of each other.

A statement said firefighting crews working on the islands were "finding it difficult to limit the spread of fire".
On La Gomera, one of the less popular tourist destinations in the Canaries, is Garajonay National Park, a world heritage site. It contains prehistoric woodland, dating back 11 million years, according to experts.
Aircraft that were previously dousing the fires with water when they first broke out a week ago were sent away as it was thought the fire was under control but winds and high temperatures have helped rekindle the flames, an official said.

Two firefighters have died while battling a wildfire in Alicante, in the east of the Spanish mainland, an emergency official said. One firefighter died on Monday and another on Sunday in an Alicante city hospital.
News of the deaths came as hundreds of people were evacuated from La Gomera by boat. Nearly 1,000 people were evacuated from the town of Valle Gran Rey on the island as authorities feared fires in surrounding hills could engulf the town.

This is what we call bear-swilling... There was not one but a whole family of bears with a very sore head this weekend after the animals broke into a holiday cabin in Norway - and drank over 100 cans of lager.
Not only did they drink the place dry, they also raided the kitchen and ate all the food, including chocolate, honey and jam, and smashed up the furniture after getting in through a window.
The owner of the cabin, Even Borthern Nilsen, returned home to find it ransacked in true rock 'n' roll style, and footprints left on the window.
According to the Telegraph, Mr Borthen Nilsen told Finnmarken newspaper: "They have bitten into the cans and drunk the beer. It's almost like taken out of Goldilocks and the three bears.
"They had a hell of a party in there. The entire cabin was destroyed. The beds and all kitchen appliances, stove, oven and cupboards and shelves were all smashed to pieces.
But now he's worried the bears will return for The Hangover: Part II, adding: "The mother has taken her young there, thus there is no guarantee that it won't happen to other cabins, or to our hut, again."
It's a good job the Borthern Nilsen's weren't in when the bears came calling, as they are amongst the most dangerous animals in the world. See more here:

<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
<p>
