Cool Running: Siberia's Ice MarathonEd Graham/The Polar Route
If you thought running the London Marathon this weekend was tough, try tackling the sub-zero Siberian version across a frozen lake.

The International Lake Baikal Ice Marathon offers competitors the unique opportunity to race across the surface of the world's largest, oldest and deepest lake.

During this extraordinary event, which starts with a shot of vodka to appease the the spirits of the Great Baikal, runners race along the surface of Lake Baikal in pre-chiseled tracks though fields of 'hummocks' - small hills of ice rubble - that are scattered on the lake's surface.

Cool Running: Siberia's Ice MarathonEd Graham/The Polar Route
It's a gruelling, bone-chilling, physical exertion that photographer and writer Ed Graham knows well, having participated in the 2013 Ice Marathon earlier this year.

Graham first encountered the Lake Baikal race over a year ago during his first journey on the Trans Siberian Railway and his love of extreme travel persuaded him to sign up for the marathon.

He writes about his experience in his blog, The Polar Route: "I said "screw it" and I signed up for it anyway, knowing I could always back out. Soon after, one of my best friends and a good travel buddy unexpectedly passed away from cancer diagnosed just two weeks before he died."

"He was a guy who always lived life to the fullest both at home and on the road, and his grand adventures had continually inspired me to do the same. Attempting this race would be my own version of living a full life, and I knew then that I had to complete it."

Graham completed the marathon in March and managed to take some incredible pictures while he was at it.

Have a look at his astonishing photographs of ice gems glowing in the sunset and the vast, black-ice expanse of the frozen Lake Baikal below.

Fancy a staycation this summer? We've teamed up with the runnymede-on-thames to offer one lucky user the chance to win a luxury family break by the river.

Set on the banks of the River Thames, the runnymede-on-thames is close to Windsor in Surrey and makes the perfect escape for families, with the tranquillity of a countryside escape just 40 minutes from central London.

The hotel has an award-winning spa, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts and an orchard, as well as two gorgeous riverside restaurants with views of the Thames - there is plenty to see and do for all the family, especially in the summer.

A family of four (two adults and two children) will enjoy a weekend overnight stay in a family room, with dinner in leftbank restaurant, with its buffet brimming with fresh food. Children can join a 'ducklings dinner', which allow kids to build their own burgers and create their own pizzas under the watchful eye of the chef.

After a full English breakfast the next day, the winners will also be able to set sail on the river in the runnymede's own electric boat, with a four-hour boat trip and teddy bears' picnic to enjoy along the way included in the prize.

For thrill-seeking families, the hotel is perfectly positioned for a day out at LEGOLAND Windsor, Thorpe Park or Chessington World of Adventures. The runnymede has also recently partnered with Mercedes Benz World to offer adrenalin-fuelled driving experiences for adults and children, as long as they are 1.5m tall (children older than 11 can get behind the wheel under the guidance of a professional instructor, while parents can test their nerve on the track).

Visit runnymedehotel.co.uk for more information.

The prize includes: An overnight stay for a family of four in a family room on a bed and breakfast basis, with dinner in leftbank, including a bottle of wine up to the value of £22. The winner will also have four hours' boat hire with a picnic. The prize is valid on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights for six months and is subject to availability.

Holiday prices fall in Spain and Portugal

cheap holiday destinations 2013 revealedStock photo, Albufeira Getty

If you're looking for a cheap holiday this summer, Spain and Portugal will be your best bet, according to a new Post Office Travel Money survey.

Despite the pound falling in value against the euro this year, holidaymakers planning trips to a European hotspot may find their holiday cash stretches further than expected because prices have plummeted in many popular resorts.

Spain and the Algarve have come out as the cheapest destinations in this year's Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer, which compared the cost of 10 holiday essentials across different European resorts.

Although sterling is worth 4.5 per cent less than in April 2012, this year's Post Office Holiday Costs Barometer reveals that prices are down by up to 20 per cent in Spain and almost 15 per cent in the Algarve.

The cheapest destination in the annual Post Office Travel Money barometer came out as Albufeira in Portugal, with the 10 essentials, including bottled water, sun cream and meals costing (£46.34).

In second cheapest position came Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol, Spain, (£46.50) with its 10 holiday items costing just 16p more than in the Algarve.

At only 80p less, Javea, on the Costa Blanca, came in at third place (£47.14).

Sunny Beach, Bulgaria (£47.32) fell to fourth place in the table because of a 3.4 per cent rise in local resort prices but remains within 98p of top-placed Albufeira in the Algarve.

Fierce competition to attract back UK holidaymakers put a gap of £8 to £9 between the top four resorts and fifth-placed Majorca (£55.46), where prices have fallen 8.8 per cent in a year.

In the US, even though sterling is 4.1 per cent weaker than last year against the dollar, holidaymakers heading to Orlando, Florida, will find prices much lower in the theme park capital.

Ten typical holiday purchases surveyed for the Holiday Costs Barometer - a three-course meal, cup of coffee, bottle of beer, glass of wine, soft drink, bottled water, suncream, insect repellent, cigarettes and newspaper - cost 21.2 per cent less than in 2012 (£58.16).

You'll also be quids in if you choose the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh because prices are over 17 per cent lower than a year ago (£62.83).

Egypt's mid-haul competitor Dubai - which came out as the most expensive destination on the list (£103.23) - was 64 per cent more expensive.

Prices have also fallen, by 5.2 per cent, in Split (£70.84), a strong incentive for the increasing numbers of UK holidaymakers now choosing Croatia.

Although resort prices have fallen by around six per cent in Corfu, Greece (£64.45), the barometer basket was 8.7 per cent cheaper in Marmaris, Turkey (£58.84). However, people who choose to holiday in Bodrum, another popular Turkish resort, will find themselves paying over 53 per cent more for the same holiday items (£90.15).

Similarly, visitors to the Balearic island of Menorca (£88.22) can expect to pay 59 per cent more than in neighbouring Majorca (£55.46). The high cost of eating out - over double the price of a three-course meal with drinks in Majorca - accounted for most of the difference.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money told Aol Travel: "The pound may be worth less in Europe than a year ago but fierce competition means that lower prices in several of the resorts we surveyed can easily offset the falling value of sterling. Taking some time to check out resort costs and add them to package prices to find the best overall deal will pay dividends this summer. This really is the year to do some 'sterling' work before booking a holiday: be prepared to swap destination or switch to a cheaper resort within the same country."

At the pricier end of the scale, costs were uniformly high in Italy. Tuscany (£94.92) and Sorrento (£101.79) were the most expensive European resorts surveyed for the barometer - over twice the price of the four best value destinations.

In the UK, neither Blackpool (£65.96) nor Bournemouth (£78.01) made it into the top half of the barometer. However, bargain-hunters staying in the UK this year will find the North Country favourite 15 per cent cheaper than the south coast resort.

Tourists flock to Broadchurch location to lay flowers for fictional child's death
Patrick Redmond/ITV plc

Dorset's Jurassic Coast has seen a boom in tourism recently as fans of the ITV murder-mystery programme, Broadchurch, are visiting filming locations, with some going as far as laying flowers where fictional character Danny Latimer was found dead.

Bridport news reports that 'Broadies' are flocking to the area after seeing Bridport's West Bay featured as the backdrop of the phenomenally successful show.

The series, which stars David Tennant and Olivia Coleman, is watched by over 9 million viewers.

Roy Haines, from Woking, told the Bridport news that he visited the area specifically to track down filming locations from the thriller.

He said: "It is great for the area, everyone is talking about it here."

Sue Gater and Darren Lambert, from Stafford, headed to West Bay after watching Broadchurch and said: "We have been trying to pick out the places we have seen on the telly, it is very dramatic."

Broadchurch isn't just boosting tourism either. The Daily Record reports that local businesses and residents have also jumped on the bandwagon.

Natalie Manifold, a tour guide who leads Jane Austen and French Lieutenant's Woman walks in Lyme Regis said: "People kept telling me to start a Broadchurch tour because they already come here to see the show's sights, so it made sense."

Manifold also confirmed that flowers had been left at the spot on the shore where 11-year-old Danny's body was found.

Chris Chibnall, the Bridport-based writer of the programme, has taken great pains to keep the identity of the murderer a secret, even from other cast members saying: "None of them knew who the killer was.

"It added an extra level of intrigue to the production: the cast and crew started their own sweepstake, the make-up truck kept a rogues' gallery of photofit pictures on their wall, with comments on the suspected motives for each character."

Broadchurch concludes tonight (Monday) at 9pm on ITV.

He's behind you! Amazing pic show unsuspecting mouse become owl lunchTom Samuelson/Caters Newsminnes

A photographer has captured the deadly moment a great grey owl swooped down on an unassuming mouse and snagged its prey.

The majestic bird swoops from the sky to snatch the tiny rodent from the ground below.

Wings spread and talons outstretched, the magnificent bird flew off with its prey firmly clutched in its beak before tucking into the tasty meal.

These images were captured by photographer Tom Samuelson, 55, while shooting along the Lake Superior shoreline just south of Two Harbours in Minnesota, US.

He's behind you! Amazing pic show unsuspecting mouse become owl lunchTom Samuelson/Caters News

The great grey owl is a very large owl distributed across the Northern Hemisphere.

They breed in North America, from as far east as Quebec to the Pacific coast and Alaska, and from Finland and Estonia across northern Asia.

They are permanent residents, but may move south and southeast when food is scarce.

A small population, estimated at less than 100 birds, occurs in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. This population is the southernmost population of the species' range and is listed as endangered under California's Endangered Species Act.

The animals have big, rounded heads, and their length ranges from 61 to 84cm (24 to 33in).

The wingspan can exceed 152cm (60 in), but averages 142 cm (56in) for females and 140cm (55in) for males.

Great grey owls rely heavily upon small rodents for prey, with voles being their main food source.

But this poor little mouse just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Two face charges over Duchess of Cambridge France holiday topless photosGetty

Two people have been placed under formal investigation for invasion of privacy over topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge sunbathing on holiday in France being published in a French magazine.

The head of the publisher of the French edition of Closer magazine, Ernesto Mauri, and the photographer who took the pictures of Kate and Prince William sunbathing, have been placed under investigation, which, according to the Guardian, is the last move before being charged in France.

Photographer Valerie Suau took pictures of the Duchess in her swimwear, which were published in the local La Provence paper, but she denies taking any topless photos, reports the BBC.

Mr Mauri is the head of Mondadori, the Italian publisher of Closer, owned by the country's former Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi.

Two face charges over Duchess of Cambridge France holiday topless photosGetty

The pictures were taken when the royals were enjoying a holiday in the south of France, at a chateau owned by the Queen's nephew, Viscount Linley, set on a 640-acre estate in the Provencal village of Viens, east of Avignon.

The photos in question were printed in France in September 2012, but were not printed in British press in the light of the Leveson report.

They were, however, printed in other European publications.

St James' Palace launched a complaint after the photos were initially published, which lead to the criminal investigation announced on Wednesday.

The Duke and Duchess were on a visit to the Solomon Islands at the time the pics emerged, but launched separate criminal proceedings against the photographer under France's privacy laws as soon as they were published.

According to the BBC, a French court banned Closer from re-publishing the pictures and the magazine was ordered to hand over the originals within 24 hours, or face an £8000-a-day fine.

The Duke and Duchess' lawyer, Aurelien Hamelle, said the Duchess was "a young woman, not an object", and said the couple felt "violated" in a "highly intimate moment during a scene of married life", reports the Evening Standard.

Mr Hamelle also referred to Princess Diana's death in 1996, and said it was "just six days after the 15th anniversary of the cynical and morbid hunt that led to the death of William's mother".

The pictures were taken from a public road, from where the chateau's raised swimming pool is visible. But Mr Hamelle said a photographer would have needed to be using a long lens, even so.

The BBC reports that La Provence said Ms Suau had the paper's "support in the legal challenge she is facing today".

A spokesman for St James' Palace told the Evening Standard: "The ongoing legal process is a matter for the French authorities."

Virgin launches 'in-flight flirting' seatback systemVirgin America

Ever fancied the good-looking stranger sitting five rows behind you on a flight? Come on, we've all been there.

But now a new Virgin entertainment system means you can order that sexy stranger a drink - straight from your seat.

To mark its latest Vegas expansion, Virgin America has launched a first-of-its-kind seat-to-seat delivery service on flights across the US.

The feature allows you to use the airline's Red in-flight entertainment platform to order a drink, meal or snack for fellow guests onboard, using the on-demand food ordering system.

Meaning, you can now send an in-flight cocktail to that friendly stranger in seat 4A - and then follow up with a text message using the seat-to-seat chat function also on Red.

Richard Branson celebrated the launch of Virgin America's new daily non-stop flight service from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS) with a red carpet welcome for guests onboard its inaugural flight.

He also introduced the new seat-to-seat buying feature with a video entitled 'Sir Richard Branson's Guide To Getting Lucky'.

After introducing himself as "Branson, Sir Richard Branson", he says, "Here's my guide to getting lucky at 30,000ft."

Then, he gives a step to step guide on how he would woo a woman, including puppies, pole-vaulting, and whisking her off to a private island (ahem Necker?).

Then he says: "For a cost-effective alternative, try treating her or him to something delicious using the new seat-to-seat feature of Red, the Virgin America in-flight entertainment system.

"Just order a drink, meal or snack, select his or her's seat, and don't forget to seal the deal with a suggestive seat-to-seat chat.

He finished: "I'm not a betting man, but I'd say your chances of de-planing with a plus one are at least 50%.

"Best of luck up there. Cheers."

Shell shock: Turtle survives 15-minutes in 6ft alligator's jawsCaters

These incredible pictures show how a hardy little turtle managed a victory over a mighty alligator during an exhausting 15-minute battle.

The champion proved too much of a tough nut to crack after the 6ft animal tried to clamp its powerful jaws around the small reptile.

The South American alligator, pictured in the Okefenokee Swamp, Georgia, by wildlife photographer Patrick Castleberry, 51, spent up to 15 minutes trying to prise the turtle's shell open and enjoy a quick-fix supper.

But the Eastern River Cooter turned out to be anything but, and its shell earned him a life-saving victory in the battle, which Patrick described as "turtle one, alligator nil".

He had been there to photograph herons, but noticed the turtle versus alligator fight going on at the side of the river.

He watched while the alligator tried to crack the shell but, when it gave up, Patrick wondered over expecting the turtle to be dead.

But, according to Caters News, he said it was "quite alive and on its back. I flipped it over and it scrambled into the water".

Fancy sea-ing that? Katherine Jenkins to sing on P&O CruisesPA

She's the dazzling singer who's been making headlines for her plunging attire at Margaret Thatcher's funeral, and for running the London Marathon with her makeup on (where, just for the record, we thought she looked fab).

And now Katherine Jenkins is set to add a sprinkling of her glamour to two P&O Cruises, where she will delight guests by performing for them.

The four-night cruises on the Oriana depart from Southampton on 31 October and 27 November, and will both call at Zeebrugge (for Bruges) and Amsterdam, and start from £399 per person.

The Oriana, which is exclusively for adults, has three pools, Oasis Spa, gym, theatre, cinema, sports court, traditional deck games, plus numerous restaurants and bars, including Ocean Grill by celebrity chef Marco Pierre White.

P&O spokeswoman Carol Marlow told Aol Travel: "These short breaks provide the opportunity for an indulgent weekend of fine dining, pampering in the spa, time to explore the ports, rounding it all off with a very special performance from the world's most prolific classical crossover artist Katherine Jenkins."

Cruises are now offering more 'celebrity experiences' as part of their packages to attract holidaymakers, and this year has seen, and will see, a host of stars take to the high seas.

Back in May, Russell Watson performed for guests on a three-night trip on P&O's Aurora, while others picked up gardening tips from Charlie Dimmock on a trip around the Canaries with Fred Olsen that set off on the 22 April, and travellers on P&O's Azura were treated to a guest appearance by Britain's Got Talent stars Jonathan and Charlotte.

Going forward, you can show off your fancy footwork with stars from Strictly Come Dancing, with seven SCD-themed cruises booked in for 2013 with P&O Cruises.

Celebrated author Bill Bryson will be giving lectures on Cunard's 'Autumn Colours' voyage from New York to Canada via New England between 15 and 27 October.

And renowned wine expert and specialist sommelier Olly Smith will be on board P&O's Azura for an elegant 'booze cruise' departing on 7 September from Southampton.

A dramatic rescue of a baby humpback whale that became stranded on a shoal in Baja California, Mexico, took place this week.

The animal had become stranded just beyond El Coromuel beach during low tide, and is thought to have entered La Paz Bay from the Sea of Cortez.

According to Octavo Dia, swimmers and tourists at the Coromuel water park saw the 30ft whale struggling, and notified the Marina and Profepa, a Mexican environmental agency.

Caring citizens and a number of boats took part in the rescue, which saw the beautiful animal pulled free with the use of ropes.

Octavia Dia reported: ""The effort followed the protocol for marine mammal rescue. The struggle to save the whale lasted over two hours, but the successful results incited elated uproar in the concerned witnesses."

The Spanish-language video above shows parts of the rescue, but, according to Grind TV,
biologist Francisco Gomez says that humpback whales are migrating north to Alaskan waters and that younger whales, particularly sick ones, will sometimes swim to closely to shore and become stranded.

Jonathan Roldan, who runs the Tailhunter International sport fishing business, wrote about the incident on his Facebook page, saying: "Hope you got to see this yesterday. It was incredible. About 30 pangas and launches out there trying to help this stranded whale right off the beach on one of the shoals. Folks were lined up in the streets with cameras and binoculars."

The whale has not been seen since, but it is believed to have made it safely back into the Sea of Cortez.

Revealed! How to save on a holiday rentalRex

Having a holiday villa all to yourself with your own swimming pool, outdoor barbecue and spectacular views might be idyllic, but can be quite costly.

That's why holiday rentals specialist Owners Direct has revealed a few ways to reduce the costs without compromising on quality or fun on your next holiday.

The website asked its travellers and home owners to give their insider money-saving tips to help others save those all-important pounds or euros.

"Take the mother-in-law on holiday with you to save on expensive childcare costs and babysitters," advises one traveller.

Gillian Chappell, who owns a holiday home in Spain, said: "Shopping for fruit and veg in local markets is fun and cheap too. A good holiday home owner will provide a list of local market days in the property. It's also a good opportunity to practice your Spanish and sometimes you can get even better bargains just by speaking the lingo!"

Another holiday home owner, Caroline Ward, who has a villa in Portugal said: "Always buy toiletries and sun lotions before you go as these things are double the price in most EU countries."

More top tips from travellers and holiday owners include:

- "Plan ahead as far as you can when booking car parking, car hire, flights/ferry transfer and of course accommodation as you can save hundreds, I do." (Dave, traveller)

- "Don't skimp on accommodation but then eat at home and drink local wine to save money." (Karen Pugh, holiday home owner Portugal)

- "Don't waste money on expensive guide books, instead use websites, local tourist offices and tap into the local knowledge of holiday home owners" (Kate, traveller)

- "Live like a local and shop where they shop and also don't use taxis, take the bus and train instead." (Tanya, traveller)

- "I always book flights when they are at their cheapest even though I don't yet have accommodation. Then nearer the time I book the villa or apartment as sometimes there are great special offers. (Diane, traveller)

Angela Southall, Marketing Manager of Owners Direct said: "Booking accommodation direct with the owner on a site means you are likely to have made a saving compared with the cost of a hotel.

"To make your budget stretch further try renting a property that isn't on the beach as these come at a premium price, don't travel in school holidays unless you have to, go away with family and friends and split the bills and keep an eye on last minute offers from our owners. These might seem obvious but they do mean big savings and more cash for holiday treats such as ice creams and cocktails."

According to the Daily Mail, the Kardashians flew to Mykonos on Thursday, via Athens. They are expected to stay for ten days, and are filming the trip for their reality show.

Yesterday Kim tweeted that she was on on a "family vacay", and later posted two pictures: one showed a stunning blue infinity pool overlooking the sea, with the caption, "Today's vibe was epic... Having a blast with the family."

She followed that up with a picture of a beautiful sunset, with the caption: "Greece lightening."

Yesterday Kim spent the afternoon on a luxury yacht with her parents Bruce and Kris, and sisters Kourtney, Khloe, Kylie and Kendall.

However, she kept a low profile and stayed out of the sun - perhaps getting some rest as she prepares for the birth of her first child in July.

Earlier in the day, her sisters Kourtney and Khloe and their half-brother Brody travelled to a smaller island for swimming and snorkelling, followed by a mountainside hike.

Although the weather looks beautiful, temperatures in Greece are several degrees lower than LA right now, with highs of around 21C.

Well, say what you like about the Kardashian/Jenner family but you certainly can't accuse them of being the fly-and-flop holiday types.

Bruce Jenner, Brody Jenner, Kendall Jenner, and Khloe Kardashian were all spotted heading out on a horse riding expedition while shooting scenes for the reality programme, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, in Greece at the weekend.

And while they looked right at home on horseback, mum-to-be Kim decided to opt out of that energetic activity.

Instead, she's been spotted taking pics of her sisters, and showing her cute nephew Mason the sights from their luxury yacht.
