The annual National Geographic Traveler Magazine's 2013 Photography Contest is now underway - and, judging by this little selection of entries below, it's likely to be as spectacular than ever.

The winner of this prestigious contest, which invites photographers from around the world to enter their best work, will scoop a 10-day National Geographic Expedition to the Galapagos Islands aboard the National Geographic Endeavour.

This contest is celebrating its 25th year in 2013, making it the longest-running photo contest in the world.

Keith Bellows, the editor of National Geographic Traveler Magazine, said: "
In the last few years it seems as if the quality of shots has taken a quantum leap forward."

"The pictures increasingly reflect a more sophisticated way of seeing and interpreting the world, making the judging process more difficult. We encourage photographers to enter their work and compete against the best."

Entrants can submit photographs at nationalgeographic.com in any of four categories: travel portraits; outdoor scenes; sense of place and spontaneous moments for a $15 (£9.68) fee per photo.

Enormous sand dune 'eating' houses, forest and roads in South West FranceThe Dune de Pyla: Getty

The Great Dune of Pyla isn't just the largest sand dune in Europe - it's also a sand dune that's rapidly moving inland, 'swallowing' houses, trees and roads in its path.

According to the Daily Mail, the dune, also known at the Great Dune of Pilat, is located on the Atlantic coast in La Teste-de-Buch, around 60km south west of Bordeaux.

It measures 500 metres in width, is three kilometres long and rises to a height of 107 metres above sea level.

For anyone brave enough to take on the challenge of climbing it, the views of the sea coast, the Pyrenees and the pine trees of the Les Landes forest are amazing.

But it's also moving inland at a reasonably rapid rate.

According to the BBC, the westerly Atlantic winds have eroded sand from the sea-facing side and deposited it on the land side.

The dune is slowly migrating away from the coast, covering the pine forest that flanks it.

According to Amusing Planet, it has even engulfed houses and roads. The site describes its rate of movement as "discontinuous", saying: "Sometimes it moves fast (10 metres in a year) and sometimes very slow (less than a metre). During the last 57 years, the dune has moved some 280 metres giving an annual displacement of 4.9 metres per year."

But, thanks to its spectacular size and beauty, the dune attracts around one million visitors a year, according to the Amusing Planet.

Heart-melting pic alert: Baby monkey, lion and tiger cuddle up at zooRex

What about this for a super-cute picture?

A group of adorable youngsters got cosy in an 'animal kindergarten' at a zoo in Shenyang, the capital of northeast China's Liaoning.

The baby monkey looks right at home clinging to the lion cub's back, while the tiger cub nestles into the lion for a bit of a cuddle, too.

We doubt they'll be able to stay BFFs forever (what with that little problem of the monkey becoming a potential lunch date) but it's certainly a cute sight to see.

All together, now: Awww.

Turkish Airlines bans bright lipstick on air hostesses

Turkish Airlines bans bright lipstick on hostessesAFP

Turkish Airlines has banned its air hostesses from wearing red or pink lipstick - a move that has seen the government accused of trying to Islamise the country, according to reports.

In a protest at the measure, a number of women have posted pictures of themselves wearing bright lipstick on social media websites.

According to AFP, Turkish Airlines amended its cabin crew dress code to prohibit red or pink lipstick following "complaints submitted by passenger".

The Herald Sun reports that the company said in a statement that "simple make-up, immaculate and in pastel colours, is preferred for staff working in the service sector".

But it's the latest in a string of conservative new measures introduced by the airline that has sparked outrage from secular Turks, including a ban on serving alcohol on internal flights.

And, in February, suggestions for new uniforms for flight attendants - ankle-length dresses and Ottoman-style fez caps - were criticised as too conservative.

Ultimately, they were not introduced.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Prime Minister Recep Tayyin Erdogan's Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party, who have been in power for over a decade, is often accused of trying to sway the country to be more conservative.

Gursel Tekin, vice-president of the main opposition party CHP, described the latest lipstick measure as "an act of perversion", adding: "How else could you describe it?"

Pride of lions attack and kill adult giraffeRex

A pride of lions managed to bring down an unusual source of prey in Kenya's Masai Mara - a large adult giraffe.

British wildlife photographer and safari guide Paul Goldstein says he was kept awake most of the night from the noise of the lions killing then fighting over the prey. Paul, from Wimbledon, told Rex Features: "This was an adult bull giraffe, it must have been sick or wounded otherwise this particular pride, which I have spent many months with, would never have taken him down.

"However it proved a huge larder for many days and, as it was quite cool, the meat did not go off too quickly.

"Watching the hierarchy on the dinner table was fascinating although with such a large feast the elders were not as robust as they normally are with the cubs."

Giraffes are not easy prey for lions because of their height which makes them difficult to bring down.

Lions kill by grasping the throat of their prey and suffocating it, and they cannot easily reach the throat of a giraffe whilst it is standing up. However, by working together lions can hunt and kill adult giraffes.

They will chase them onto rocky ground, where they cannot keep their balance easily, hoping to trip them up.

At other times they simply surround the giraffe and repeatedly attack it as a group until it falls, when they can seize its throat.

Giraffes also have a very powerful kick that can kill a lion so they generally prefer to hunt easier prey such as antelope and zebra.

It's official: the countdown to the opening of ABBA The Museum in Stockholm has begun, with doors due to open on 7 May.

The Swedish museum displays the complete history of the seventies mega-band, from gold records to reproductions of their recording studio and dressing rooms.

Fancy chatting with Agnetha? Die-hard fans may get the opportunity to speak to a real band member as the museum has installed a phone, which the four band members will occasionally call.

there is also a piano that has been electronacally hooked up to Benny's own piano in his music studio so when he plays at home, lucky visitors can catch him in action at the museum.

Not only can visitors record their own versions of classic ABBA hits, there's also a chance for fans to try on some of the bands flamboyant costumes and, with the aid of holograms, play on the stage with them.

According to the official website, all of the material that you record during your visit will be stored on the personal ID number on your entrance ticket.

Tickets to this ABBA extravaganza don't come cheap however, with a pass to the museum costing 195 Krona - £19.29.

The ABBA Museum is a part of the new Swedish Music Hall of Fame, which contains exhibitions on the history of Swedish popular music, a Hall of Fame dedicated to Sweden's stars and temporary exhibitions.

Peking duck! Giant inflatable art installation sails into Victoria Harbour in Hong KongAFP

A huge inflatable rubber duck sailed into Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour this week - to the cheers of hundreds of onlookers who'd gathered to watch it.

The 16.5-metre art installation - inspired by children's bath times - is the brainchild of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman.

It was brought into the harbour by a tiny-in-comparison tugboat, and dwarfed other vessels in its wake.

According to insing.com, the Rubber Duck has travelled to 13 different cities in nine different countries since 2007, from Australia to Brazil.

The duck will stay in the harbour until 9 June and, says the artist, is all about "connecting people".

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Hofman said: "It's about connecting people, don't take life for granted, your urban space for granted. You walk every day the same route to work, but look and stop going too fast."

Twitter was a-buzz with sightings of the duck, while people squashed up to office windows to get a pic, as well as gathering in the harbour.

Crowds queued as early as 6am to see the top billing of the day (sorry), and one commuter told Agence France Presse (AFP): "It takes me back to my childhood memories", while another, Kathy Cheung, said: :I think it's the last time I will see a rubber duck in Hong Kong. It has a message for peace but for me it's just fun."

We think it's brilliantly quackers...

British tourists' shock at £54 ice creams in Rome

British tourists' shock at £54 ice creams in RomeGetty

A group of tourists in Rome were charged a whopping £54 for four ice creams.

British holidaymakers Roger Bannister, his brother Steven and their wives Wendy and Joyce were shocked when they ordered four cones of gelato from an ice cream bar at the top of Via della Vite, just off Piazza di Spagna, and were asked to pay 64 euros.

Speaking to Corriere Della Serra, Roger said: "We weren't sitting at a table. We weren't standing on the Spanish Steps. We were over there in that bar on the corner. We bought the ice creams to eat in the street."

The group said they ordered four "wrap-around" cones "with two wafers and three flavours" costing 16 euros each. "Unbelievable, isn't it. It's not normal, right?"

Roger added: "And when we paid, they didn't even say thanks."

According to the Daily Telegraph, the family were on a six-day holiday to Italy.

The managers of the bar in Via della Vita told the newspaper that the ice creams were worth the money as they were large portions.

"No one forced them to order big ice creams. We also serve small ones which only cost 2.50 euros. But if you want a lot of ice cream then it is worth the price. And the prices are displayed everywhere."

But officials in Rome said it's "a scandal" that tourists are being charged this much.

City councillor Matteo Costantini said: "It's not the first time that things like this have happened."

In 2009, two Japanese tourists were handed a bill for €695 at the Passetto restaurant.

Strange sea fog ruins Bank Holiday for beachgoers in Brighton

Strange sea fog ruins Bank Holiday for beachgoers in BrightonGetty

While most of the country basked in balmy temperatures of up to 22.2C on Bank Holiday Monday, tourists looking for some sun on Brighton beach may have been a bit disappointed - as a band of sea fog threatened to engulf them.

England was hotter than many areas in the Mediterranean, but the sea mist may have put a dampener on the sun-worshipping in the coastal town.

Met Office spokeswoman Helen Chivers told Aol Travel that sea fog is actually very common in the spring because the seas around our shores are at their coldest at this time of year.

Helen explained: "It occurs when warm, moist air blows in from the Atlantic and is cooled from below as it passes over cold seas.

"This causes the water vapour in the air to condense and form fog or low cloud, which is then blown on shore.

"You often find the low cloud and fog drifting inland overnight but as the temperature of the land rises in the sunshine by day the fog will 'burn back' to the coast, as we saw yesterday (Monday)."

Strange sea fog ruins Bank Holiday for beachgoers in BrightonGetty

Tuesday could be the hottest day of the years so far, added Helen, but temps are downhill from Wednesday.

"This will be the last warm and sunny day for a while", Helen said. "Temperatures will be in the low 20s in many areas and should reach a high of 23C or 24C this afternoon.

"The change comes overnight tonight and we'll all have a cloudier and cooler day tomorrow (Wednesday), with outbreaks of rain moving northeast across the UK.

"The weather then stays unsettled for the rest of the week and into the weekend, with a particularly wet and windy day likely on Thursday."

Amazing pic shows volcano billowing red smoke at sunriseHotspot Media

With the vivid red smoke billowing into the sky amid the misty sand dunes, these are the blissful views at the break of dawn at a volcano in Indonesia.

The spectacular pictures were captured at sunrise and sunset of Mount Bromo by landscape photographer Helminadia Jabur.

The area is known for its breathtaking views at first light and it did not fail to disappoint when the 36-year-old visited the volcano, which is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java.

Helminadia told Hotspot Media: "The volcano is noted for its spectacular sunrises, and majestic views all the way to Semeru volcano, which is located further behind it, so ever since I saw some images of the volcano, I just could not help myself visiting the area to capture it."

Amazing pic shows volcano billowing red smoke at sunriseHotspot Media

Mount Bromo is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif, in East Java, Indonesia.

At 2,329 metres (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak of the massif, but is the most well known.

The massif area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia.

The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.

Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a vast plain called the Sea of Sand, a protected nature reserve since 1919.

The typical way to visit Mount Bromo is from the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang, from where you can walk to the volcano in about 45 minutes. But it is also possible to take an organised jeep tour, which includes a stop at the viewpoint on Mount Penanjakan (2,770 m or 9,088 ft).

The annual Beltane Fire Festival set Edinburgh alight with flame-wielding demons, semi-nude fire sprites and red-painted ghouls on the night of 30 April.

The 2013 Beltane Fire Festival saw hundreds flock to Calton Hill in Edinburgh to celebrate the coming of summer on the first day of May.

The modern version, run by the Beltane Fire Society, began in 1988 and was inspired by the ancient Gaelic festival of Beltane.

According to their website, the festival starts with a procession, led by the May Queen and the Green Man, from the National Monument (know to Beltaners as the Acropolis), which proceeds anti-clockwise around the path, meeting various groups along the way.

The procession is driven by the beat of drums which urge it towards summer and their journey is punctuated by various groups who either help or hinder their progress towards the Green Man's fate and the May Queen's destiny.

After a dramatic stage performance signifying the inception of summer, the May Queen and Green Man spark the birth of summer by lighting a huge bonfire, which is followed by feasting and dancing.
