Train driver hospitalised after stones thrown at his windowStock photo/PA

A train driver in Scotland has been seriously injured after stones were thrown at his window while he was operating a train.

The BBC reports that the driver suffered from a eye injury caused by shattered glass from the impact.

According to local news service The Scotsman, paramedics were called to the scene, between Blantyre and Newton stations, at 10pm yesterday (Wednesday) evening.

The driver, who had managed to pull out some of the glass from his eye before they arrived, was transported by ambulance to a hospital in East Kilbride.

The British Transport Police said that several stones were thrown from a field, smashing into the train as it approached Newton Station.

Police are appealing for witnesses. In a statement, a ScotRail spokeswoman said: "We do not tolerate crime of any kind and hope the person or people responsible are brought to justice."

First 'Islamic' hotel in Egypt separates men and women

The first 'Islamic' hotel has opened in Hurghada on Egypt's Red Sea coast.

But it's unlikely the new hotel will go down very well with the thousands of British and Russian tourists that flock to the area every year - as there are separate floors for women and men, and alcohol is strictly prohibited.

The manager of the new hotel has waited 25 years for the opportunity to open such a place, and hopes it will be part of a tourism 'revolution' in the area.

But, according to a report by the BBC, although tourism authorities welcome choice, they do not necessarily agree with such strict regulations.

Ahmed Aldor, director of tourism in Hurghada, told the news site: "It is accepted to have Islamic rules at some hotels. But, at the same time, there must be all facilities on offer at other hotels. Alcohol must be available for tourism. We are a cosmopolitan city."

Would you stay at an alcohol-free hotel? Leave your thoughts below.

When you reach your eighties, you'd probably imagine that your pace of life would slow down a little.

But that's not the case for two octogenarians, who are preparing to go head-to-head in a battle to be the oldest man to summit Mount Everest in Nepal.

81-year-old Min Bahadur Sherchan of Nepal and his 80-year-old rival Yuichiro Miura of Japan are both waiting at Everest Base Camp.

In the next couple of weeks, the two climbers will set out for the 29,029-foot summit.

According to The Times of India, this will be Miura's third climb of Everest. He completed his first climb at the age of 70 in 2003 and is optimistic, despite having heart surgery in January this year and a broken his hip two years ago.

He told the paper: "I am still healthy and strong. I think I have a good chance to reach the summit."

Sherchan is the current record holder, having previously climbed Everest in 2008 at the age of 76.

Apparently he managed to reach the top of the world's tallest peak exactly one day before his Japanese counterpart, who was 75 at the time.

If everything goes as planned, the Sherpa team charged with fixing the ropes up the mountain will complete their work soon, which will clear the way for the commercial climbing squads to begin their ascents once they get a clear weather window.

About 4,000 people have climbed Everest ever since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa reached the summit in 1953.

In 2012, Tamae Watanabe, 73, became the oldest woman to climb the peak.

Amazing pic as lightning strikes the Grand Canyon Caters

This is the incredible moment a fierce lightning bolt crashed against the Grand Canyon, illuminating the steep canyon walls. SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

Shrouded in darkness, the breathtaking landscape was shocked into life as Mother Nature sent the bolt storming down to Earth.

As it cracked against the rocks, the bright blue bolt illuminated the South Rim of the canyon, considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

With just the Desert View Watchtower in the foreground, the lightning was perfectly framed by the canyon, which is located in Arizona, US.

The once-in-a-lifetime shot, captured by photographer Travis Roe, was taken last year but has only just surfaced after he submitted the image to the US Department of the Interior.

The DOI, the government agency tasked with protecting US land, water and wildlife, runs an annual photo contest called Share the Experience.

They revealed Travis' stunning entry to the contest has become one of the most liked and viewed photographs they have ever released.

The agency recently became a web hit with its incredible photos, gaining over 40,000 followers on its Instagram page in the process.

The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide and a mile deep. It was created at least 17 million years ago as the Colorado River and its tributaries sliced through layer after layer of rock, cutting their channels while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted.

British holidaymakers waste £684 million on things they forget to pack

Revealed! We're a nation of holiday wasters!Rex

How do you pack for a holiday? However much we plan what to pack for our summer holiday, there's always something we've forgotten and have to buy at the airport - whether it be deodorant, books for the beach or even forgotten flip flops.

A new survey has revealed that British tourists waste a whopping £684 million replacing forgotten items for their summer holiday.

The research by Travelodge found that 52 per cent of holidaymakers dedicate around seven hours packing their holiday essentials for one trip, which adds up to a staggering 138 million man hours across the nation.

Despite spending so much time packing, 51 per cent still forgets a vital holiday essential at home, costing an average £26.50 (£684 million as a nation) to buy items such as swimwear, a cardigan, a new pair of shoes and sunglasses they already bought for the holiday.

The poll also proved that some of us can be pretty lazy, with 21 per cent of Britons just throwing a selection of items into their suitcase and hoping for the best, while 61 per cent pack with military precision and dedicate time ahead of packing, making a check-list and detailed schedule before even dusting off a suitcase.

Ironically, even though many Brits end up replacing a holiday item, 67 per cent admitted they return home with up to six unworn outfits and three pairs of shoes that weren't suitable.

Travelodge surveyed 2,000 adults and revealed that 82 per cent of us find packing for a summer break stressful, 20 per cent rely on our partners to pack for us and nine per cent of 25 to 34-year-olds even get their mothers to do it!

Have you ever forgotten a holiday essential and had to buy it again? And we're curious; do you pack with military precision or just throw a few items in your case and play pot luck? Leave a comment and let us know below.

Revealed! British holidaymakers' biggest beach bugbearsStock photo, beach hawker: Getty

If you thought nudists might be the biggest peeve for us Brits at the beach, you'd be wrong.

It seems our stiff upper lip is loosening, as a recent survey reveals that just 1 per cent voted bare bums a problem.

Our prudish stereotype might not be right, but what is our biggest pet hate while we're lazing by the sea?

In a survey of 16,500 British holidaymakers, beach sellers have been named the biggest annoyance whilst relaxing on the beach, according to online travel agent On the Beach.

A whopping 21% voting this as their greatest beach bugbear.

The survey, which ranked common annoyances that can often spoil a day at the beach, also revealed a nation angered by those neglecting the environment and health. Littering was ranked as the 2nd biggest annoyance, followed by fellow holidaymakers smoking on the beach with 18% and 16% of the vote respectively.

Brits were hardest on themselves, with one in four finding holidaymakers from the UK most annoying in-resort, perhaps due to the younger generation letting their hair down a bit too much on holiday.

When in the past Brits may have judged other nations on preconceived opinions, results show this way of thinking is fast becoming outdated.

Just one in 10 Brits named the Germans as the most annoying nation abroad and a minuscule two per cent named the French.

Alistair Daly, Chief Marketing Officer at On the Beach told Aol Travel: "We all look forward to our long-awaited holiday in the sun, so any distractions when we're trying to relax can be very annoying.

"We are renowned as a nation of prudes, especially compared to some of our more liberal European neighbours, however our results show that Brits are no longer offended by nudity, so it would seem this stereotype is somewhat obsolete.

"The results also suggest dated opinions of other nations are also dying out, as travel savvy Brits become increasingly relaxed towards holidaymakers from other countries."

Plans for London-Tokyo train link set in motion

Plans for London-Tokyo train link set in motionStock photo: Trans Siberian Railway

Plans for the ultimate direct train link from London to Tokyo are being discussed by officials from Russia and Japan this week.

Direct transport from London to Tokyo would take around two weeks, according to the plans, which would see the existing Trans Siberian railway extended, with a bridge from the Russian mainland to the island of Sakhalin.

The train route would then continue south for 380 miles until it reaches the coast, where a 25-mile tunnel will be constructed under the Soya Strait, enabling the train to directly enter Japanese territory.

The focus of the route is currently trade-based, with Koichi Yamagishi, director of overseas projects at Japan's ministry of transport, telling the Daily Telegraph: "In terms of natural resources, this rail link would be a very positive development.

"To have direct access to the Sakhalin 1 and 2 oil and gas projects would be very beneficial."

It is thought the first phase of the plan will start in 2016, and the project could cost £6.4 billion.

The current Trans Siberian Railway can already be used to reach China, Japan, Korea or even Vietnam all the way from London, Paris & Western Europe (although not directly).

Visit seat61.com to see how.

See the Daily Telegraph for more information about the new train link.
